New Vocations Racehorse Adoption is accepting résumés for its Olivia M. Saylor Internship, which gives college students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience working with former racehorses at New Vocations.

The internship is a five-month paid position at the New Vocations facility in Lexington, Ky. The individual must live in the local area, have extensive horse experience, and show good communication and computer skills, according to a New Vocations release.

Interns work directly with New Vocations staff to rehabilitate, retrain, and adopt out retired racehorses. Interested parties may e-mail the organization’s Kentucky facility manager, Melissa King, at Melissa@horseadoption.com.

“The program truly understands the importance of education and is happy to work with local colleges in Lexington, Ky., Columbus, Ohio, and Harrisburg, Pa., in offering additional internship opportunities to qualified students,” the New Vocations release noted. Internships can be tailored to a student’s particular interests and also meet a college program’s requirements for course credit

Racehorse owner Paul Saylor helped establish the internship in honor of his daughter, the late Olivia M. Saylor. The internship is now in its third year.

“Olivia was very concerned about the quality of life of horses after their racing careers,” Saylor said. “She would be really pleased with the success of New Vocations’ adoption program and the follow-up information provided to those who contribute horses and financial support to New Vocations.”
