While Kansas is not exactly known as a hotbed of sports fandom, the state shrewdly legalized sports betting a lot earlier than its neighbor to the east, Missouri. Kansas City Chiefs fans responded by flocking to the Sunflower State just in time to bet on a pair of Super Bowl victories, as well as a loss.
Kansas went from zero to 60 from a legislation-to-launch standpoint about as quickly as any second-wave sports wagering market. Although an effort to legalize sports betting in 2021 failed, the legislation was revived in 2022 and passed rather quickly. By September of that year, sports betting was live in four commercial casinos and on six well-known online platforms.
Since then, Kansas's highly efficient sports wagering market has performed impressively, eclipsing $300 million in monthly wagering handle for the first time in January 2025.
