About Sports Betting in Oregon

In 1989, the Oregon Lottery debuted Sports Action, an analog means for people to make parlay wagers on football. The product had its share of critics, but its presence enabled Oregon to be one of the few states exempted from the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), which went into effect in 1992.

The Oregon Legislature sunsetted Sports Action in 2007, however, and it would be 12 long years before legal sports wagering surfaced in the Beaver State again. While a handful of tribal casinos now accept retail wagers of all kinds, DraftKings, through an arrangement with the Oregon Lottery, is Oregon's exclusive statewide mobile provider.

Some major athletic movers and shakers – including homegrown Nike – have sought to challenge the status of DraftKings's mobile monopoly. But until that day comes, Oregonians will have to be content with their lone online option for sports wagering.

    September, 1989

    The Oregon Lottery debuts a football parlay betting game called Sports Action, which would enable Oregon to be exempted from the 1992 Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) that would outlaw sports betting in all but a handful of states, most notably Nevada.

  • Oregon Lottery shuts down Sports Action

    July, 2007

    Bowing to pressure from various sporting entities, the Oregon Lottery discontinues its Sports Action parlay wagering game, leaving Oregonians without a legal method to wager on sports besides horse racing.

  • Tribal casino accepts state's first sports wager in 12 years

    August, 2019

    The year after PASPA is stricken down, the Chinook Winds Casino accepts Oregon's first sports wager in 12 years.

    October, 2019
