Bejarano nearing his 4,000th career win

Rafael Bejarano, 36, has 3,998 wins in North America. He has two mounts at Santa Anita on Friday and six on Saturday.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Jockey Rafael Bejarano may reach a career milestone Friday at Santa Anita.

Bejarano begins the eight-race program with 3,998 wins in North America. Bejarano, 36, has ridden in this country since May 2002 and began his career in 2001 in his native Peru.

Bejarano has two mounts Friday – Blended Citizen in the third race and Littlefirefighter in the seventh race. He has six mounts on Saturday’s nine-race program, including Desert Law in the $100,000 Thor’s Echo Stakes for California-breds at six furlongs.

Omaha Beach to undergo tests before resuming training

Trainer Richard Mandella wants to make sure Omaha Beach's throat is completely healed before he begins training again.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Omaha Beach, the multiple graded stakes winner who was withdrawn from the Kentucky Derby last month because of an entrapped epiglottis, returned to trainer Richard Mandella’s stable at Santa Anita earlier this week.

Omaha Beach is scheduled to undergo further tests before resuming training.

Bourbon War, last in Belmont Stakes, might try turf

Bourbon War was equipped with blinkers for the Preakness, but will race without them in the Belmont Stakes.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Bourbon War, who finished last in the Belmont Stakes after running eighth in the Preakness, could make his next start on turf, trainer Mark Hennig said Wednesday.

Hennig noted that My Conquestadory, the dam of Bourbon War, was “a miler on turf.” She won the Grade 2 Summer Stakes as a first-time starter on turf and came back to win the Grade 1 Alcibiades at Keeneland when that track had a synthetic surface.

California governor calls for more veterinary oversight

California Gov. Gavin Newsom expressed concern about the rate of fatal injuries at Santa Anita in a statement issued Tuesday evening, calling for enhanced veterinary examinations for horses entered to race.

“I continue to be troubled by the horse deaths at Santa Anita Park,” the two-paragraph statement began. “Enough is enough. I’m am calling on the California Horse Racing Board to ensure that no horse races until they are examined by independent veterinarians and found fit to compete.

Gift Box, Tenfold part of large field for Stephen Foster

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A field of 12 older horses, one of the largest in years, has been entered for the Grade 2, $600,000 Stephen Foster, to be run Saturday night under the Churchill Downs lights.

The likely favorites, Gift Box and Tenfold, will start alongside each other in the 1 1/8-mile Foster in posts 6 and 7. The lineup also includes such accomplished runners as Seeking the Soul, Tom’s d’Etat, Quip, and Yoshida.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – With little fanfare, the Stephen Foster and Fleur de Lis are no longer being run as handicaps at Churchill Downs. Weight assignments for both races are now made under allowances, furthering a significant policy change by Churchill management. Both Grade 2 races had been run as handicaps since they were inaugurated in 1982 and 1975, respectively.

Servis waiting to decide if Maximum Security will run in Pegasus

Maximum Security galloped 1 1/8 miles on Wednesday at Monmouth Park, his bloodwork came back satisfactory late Tuesday, but a decision whether he will start in the $150,000 Pegasus on Sunday will not be made until Thursday when entries are taken, according to trainer Jason Servis.

“I’ll make a decision” Thursday, Servis said. “I don’t want to tell everybody yes and then change my mind. The bloodwork was okay. I think he’s still a little light.

Charles Town adds four Wednesday race cards to schedule

Charles Town has added four consecutive Wednesday race dates to its schedule beginning Thanksgiving Eve, Nov. 27. The dates replace cards canceled due to weather conditions over the winter.

The make-up dates will have a first post of 7 p.m. Eastern.

The dates request was approved at the West Virginia Racing Commission meeting Tuesday morning.

Charles Town will race on a Thursday through Saturday schedule until the Wednesday cards begin.

Baltas leaning toward sending One Bad Boy to Queen's Plate

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Trainer Richard Baltas said he’s leaning toward sending the California upstart One Bad Boy here for the $1 million Queen’s Plate on June 29.

“I’m just trying to figure out the travel arrangements, if we go,” Baltas said. “I’m like 80-20 coming. There’s also a big stakes program for 3-year-olds at Del Mar, and that’s where the owners live. If I go up there, I’m going to probably knock him out for Del Mar. That’s what I’m weighing on right now.”
