Gunnevera works five furlongs for Pegasus

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Breeders’ Cup Classic runner-up Gunnevera continued his preparations for the $9 million Pegasus World Cup by working five furlongs in 1:01.80 over his home base at Gulfstream Park West on Saturday.

Gunnevera worked in darkness at 6 a.m. with jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. in the saddle. The work was the fourth in as many weeks for Gunnevera, who will bring earnings of more than $4.1 million into the Pegasus World Cup. Ortiz, who rode Gunnevera for the first time in the Classic, has been aboard for all four of those works.

NYRA not producing 2019 calendar

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – The New York Racing Association will not produce a 2019 promotional calendar, typically given away ontrack with paid admission on New Year’s Day at Aqueduct as well as being available for purchase online.

NYRA spokesman Pat McKenna said there were several factors that went into the decision not to offer a calendar this year, including some uncertainty over NYRA’s 2019 racing schedule.

Recruiting Ready (inside) narrowly beats Skyler's Scramjet in the Gravesend Stakes.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Recruiting Ready, who won last Sunday’s Gravesend Stakes at Aqueduct, could make his next start at Oaklawn Park, trainer Stanley Hough said Friday.

Hough said Recruiting Ready would be pointed to races at six furlongs, and Oaklawn has three such stakes events: the $100,000 King Cotton on Feb. 9, the $150,000 Hot Springs on March 9, and the Grade 3, $400,000 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap on April 13. Recruiting Ready won the Bachelor Stakes by 5 1/4 lengths at Oaklawn last April.

Le General in no rush to make stakes debut

Michael Amoruso
Michelle Nevin will have her first Breeders' Cup starter with By the Moon, who's entered in the Juvenile Fillies.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Le General, an impressive New York-bred allowance winner here on Dec. 9, was conspicuous by his absence from the nominations for Monday’s $100,000 Damon Runyon Stakes for 2-year-old statebreds and Tuesday’s $150,000 Jerome Stakes for newly turned 3-year-olds.

Trainer Michelle Nevin said there is nothing amiss with Le General, she just didn’t want to run him back too soon after he posted blowout victories three weeks apart this fall.

“We’re just giving him some time to bulk back up and get ready to go,” Nevin said Friday.

Jockey Corey Nakatani

ARCADIA, Calif. – Jockey Corey Nakatani has not placed a timeline on when he can come back from injuries suffered in a spill at Del Mar on Aug. 4.

Nakatani, a visitor to morning workouts at Santa Anita on Friday, said he is undergoing physical therapy and will seek advice from doctors on a return to riding.

In late September, Nakatani underwent surgery on his back and neck.

“I’ll keep doing therapy and see where it goes,” he said. “When I’m ready, I’ll come back. You can’t put a timeline on a broken neck. Hopefully, I’ll make it back.”

ARCADIA, Calif. – Gift Box will have a winter campaign at Santa Anita after his impressive California-debut win in Wednesday’s Grade 2 San Antonio Stakes.

Trainer John Sadler said Gift Box is likely to run in the Grade 2 San Pasqual Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on Feb. 2 as a prep for the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap at 1 1/4 miles on March 9.

“Our intent would be to leave him here,” Sadler said.

The $600,000 Big Cap is the richest race for older horses at the track’s winter-spring meeting, which began Wednesday.

Illudere stretching out in turf allowance

Barbara D. Livingston
Edgard Zayas rides Saturday for the first time in eight weeks.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – A field of 11 turf specialists was drawn for Sunday’s $47,000 optional-claiming feature, carded as race 10 and at 1 3/16 miles on the turf.

The steadily improving 3-year-old Illudere will likely be favored off a corking turf debut going a mile last month at Aqueduct when beaten a nose by the more experienced Flyoff following a grueling stretch duel. Illudere, a son of Ghostzapper trained by Jimmy Jerkens, earned a career-best 92 Beyer Speed Figure. He will stretch out beyond a mile for the first time on Sunday.

Maximus Mischief looking strong ahead of Holy Bull

Barbara D. Livingston
Maximus Mischief returned $4.80 with the Remsen Stakes win.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Maximus Mischief hasn’t had a published workout since his arrival here earlier this month. But you wouldn’t know it from watching him train in the morning.

Maximus Mischief shipped to Gulfstream Park shortly after his 2 1/4-length victory in the Grade 2 Remsen at Aqueduct on Dec. 1. The undefeated son of Into Mischief is among the top Kentucky Derby hopefuls stabled in south Florida, and he certainly has looked the part during his daily gallops, which more usually end with a strong gallop down the stretch, often at better than a two-minute lick.

Hall of Fame trainer King Leatherbury taking winter off

Michael Amoruso
Trainer King Leatherbury will send Ben's Cat to Laurel Park to begin his 11-year-old season Sunday.

Hall of Fame horseman King Leatherbury won’t be training this winter and Laurel Park has named an April stakes in his honor – but don’t assume he is retiring.

“I’ve heard the rumors, but there’s nothing official,” Leatherbury said. “I won’t make any decisions until the spring.”

Leatherbury, 85, has been racing horses since 1958 and is the fifth-winningest trainer of all time in North America, with 6,501 victories. He was the nation’s leading trainer by wins in 1976 and 1977 and won at least 200 races for 11 years in a row from 1974 to 1984.
