Avery Island drills five furlongs in Louisiana Derby prep

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Avery Island, impressive winner of the Grade 3 Withers at Aqueduct in his 3-year-old debut, continued Friday toward his next objective, the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds, by working five furlongs in 1:01.20 at the Palm Meadows training center.

“He worked very well and galloped-out strong,” said trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, who witnessed the work instead of accompanying his other top Kentucky Derby prospect, Enticed, to New York for Saturday’s Grade 3 Gotham.

McLaughlin said Avery Island worked solo, as usual, on Friday.

Unique Bella may miss Santa Margarita Stakes

ARCADIA, Calif. – A recent bout with a cough may prevent the champion Unique Bella from starting in the Grade 1 Santa Margarita Stakes for fillies and mares at Santa Anita on March 17.

Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said Friday that Unique Bella has resumed training, but was unsure about immediate race plans for the sensational 4-year-old filly.

“She had a little bit of a cough and we haven’t ruled the race out yet,” Hollendorfer said.

“We have been very conservative. We’re taking things day by day.”

With Florida Derby and Dubai World Cup on the same day, jockeys face tough decisions

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. –Being in two places at the same time is never easy, especially when the two places are Miami and Dubai.

Several members of the local jockey colony will be faced with making the decision of whether to be at Gulfstream Park or Meydan Racecourse on March 31, the day two of the most important races of the season, the Grade 1 Florida Derby and the $10 million Dubai World Cup, will be run several hours and approximately 7,800 miles apart.

Roy H, Ransom the Moon to bypass Triple Bend Stakes

ARCADIA, Calif. – Last year’s sprint champion Roy H likely is bound for Dubai, and the Grade 1 winner Ransom the Moon has been sidelined by a foot abscess, developments that will cost Saturday’s Grade 1 Triple Bend Stakes at Santa Anita two of its leading nominees.

Roy H worked three furlongs in 36.60 seconds at Santa Anita on Wednesday and is scheduled to start in the $2 million Golden Shaheen Sprint at Meydan Racecourse on March 31. Roy H will not start in the Triple Bend.

Hollendorfer eyeing Santa Anita Derby for Instilled Regard

ARCADIA, Calif. – Instilled Regard, fourth in the Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds on Feb. 17, may stay in California for his next start.

Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said Wednesday that Instilled Regard is a candidate for the $1 million Santa Anita Derby on April 7, but the trainer has not ruled out the $1 million Louisiana Derby on March 24 at Fair Grounds.

“We’re not carved in stone yet,” Hollendorfer said.

Holiday Disguise streaking into Heavenly Prize

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – The New York-bred Holiday Disguise will seek her fifth straight victory when she steps into open company for the first time in the $150,000 Heavenly Prize Invitational on Saturday.

She will take on a field that includes fellow New York-bred Highway Star, a multiple graded stakes winner, and Divine Miss Grey, winner of the Interborough last out.

Holiday Disguise, trained by Linda Rice for Sheila Rosenblum, is the older half-sister to Midnight Disguise, who last Saturday won the $200,000 Busher Stakes.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Trainer David Jacobson is never bashful about wheeling horses back on short rest, and he will run Harlan Punch in Saturday’s $150,000 Stymie six days after he won a high-caliber allowance race here Sunday.

“I needed a good race out of him the other day, and we got it,” said Jacobson, noting that the 100 Beyer Speed Figure was a career-best for Harlan Punch, a 5-year-old gelding by Harlan’s Holiday. “It didn’t take anything out of him.”

The allowance and the Stymie are the same one-mile distance.
