Sharp works reveal new side of Gunnevera

Barbara D. Livingston
Trainer Antonio Sano believes that treatment for a partially descended testicle has improved Gunnevera's work ethic.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Gunnevera has always been a hard horse to motivate in his works. Until recently, that is.

Gunnevera worked five furlongs last Saturday morning in 59.40 seconds at Gulfstream Park West with Luis Saez aboard. The work came on the heels of a 58.60 clocking for the same distance one week earlier. Gunnevera is preparing for the Dubai World Cup on March 31.

Patience paying off with Classic Rock

Kenny Martin/Coglianese Photos
Making just his second start since July, Classic Rock rewarded his connections with a win in the Gulfstream Park Sprint.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – It had been a long time between graded stakes wins for trainer Kathy Ritvo, and her last one – the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Classic with Dean and Patti Reeves’s Mucho Macho Man – was obviously a tough act to follow. But with all the hard work and patience she has invested in Classic Rock over the past year, his impressive three-length victory in Saturday’s Grade 3 Gulfstream Park Sprint had to be nearly as satisfying for the Ritvo-Reeves team.

Midnight Bisou rallied to an easy 2 1/4-length score under Mike Smith in Saturday's Grade 3 Santa Ysabel.

ARCADIA, Calif. - The absence of the undefeated Dream Tree from Saturday’s Grade 3 Santa Ysabel Stakes at Santa Anita may have done more to enhance her rivalry with race winner Midnight Bisou than if she had competed.

Last fall, Dream Tree beat Midnight Bisou by a nose in two starts: a maiden race here in October and the minor Desi Arnaz Stakes at Del Mar. Since then, both fillies have stayed apart and won two stakes.
