Breeders' Cup Sprint: Whitmore looks to punch ticket in Phoenix

Michael Amoruso
Whitmore has never lost in seven starts going one turn, including the Maryland Sprint Stakes at Pimlico three weeks ago.

Early this year, Whitmore was the talk of the sprint division, opening his campaign with four consecutive victories, including a pair of Grade 3 wins, that vaulted him into the upper echelon of the division.

But things have not gone quite as well during the second half of the year. Whitmore has started just twice since defeating A. P. Indian in the Grade 3 Maryland Sprint on May 20, finishing third in both the Grade 2 True North at Belmont and the Grade 3 De Francis Memorial Dash last month at Laurel.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies: Lady Ivanka among elite Oklahoma-breds

The Oklahoma-bred Lady Ivanka (left) wins the Grade 1 Spinaway at Saratoga.

There were 525 Thoroughbred foals born in Oklahoma in 2015, representing just 2.5 percent of the registered foal crop in the United States. But a good horse can come from anywhere, as Oklahoma-bred millionaires Lady’s Secret, Kip Deville, and Clever Trevor have already proved.

And among those 525 Thoroughbreds born in the Sooner State two years ago was Lady Ivanka, who will go for the second Grade 1 win of her nascent career in Sunday’s Frizette Stakes at Belmont Park.

One-horse spill results in no-contest declaration at Parx

The seventh race at Parx on Monday was declared a no contest after a one-horse spill left jockey Mychel Sanchez lying unconscious in the center of the turf course on the first turn of the 1 1/16-mile race. The outriders waved the remaining eight runners in the field to a halt in the stretch.

Sanchez was aboard Shake Things Up for trainer Jorge Navarro in the $16,000 claiming race. Shake Things Up was racing in third position entering the first turn when he appeared to break down, although it is possible he may have clipped the heels of Vinceremos.

Voodoo Song may make quick turnaround for Hill Prince

Barbara D. Livingston
Trainer Linda Rice is mulling a start in the Grade 3 Hill Prince for Saranac Stakes winner Voodoo Song.

Voodoo Song, who won two races in five days as part of his four-win Saratoga meet, could wheel back in a week in Saturday’s Grade 3, $500,000 Hill Prince Stakes at Belmont Park, trainer Linda Rice said Monday.

Voodoo Song finished second, beaten three-quarters of a length by Just Howard, in the Grade 3, $200,000 Commonwealth Derby last Saturday at Laurel.

“It is a possibility only because how often do you get to run for $500,000 in your backyard?” Rice said. “And, he’s a 3-year-old and there are only a few straight 3-year-old grass races left this year.”
