Dortmund scratched from Awesome Again, pointed to easier comeback race

Barbara D. Livingston
Dortmund will return to dirt after finishing sixth in his turf debut on March 11.

Dortmund will be scratched from the Grade 1 Awesome Again Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita, trainer Art Sherman said Thursday.

The Awesome Again was scheduled to be Dortmund's first race since April 1. He was announced as retired after that race, then put back in training. Dortmund is owned by Kaleem Shah.

"I got to talking it over with Kaleem, and we decided it's an awful lot to ask him to go a mile and an eighth after a long layoff," Sherman said. "I'd like to get an easier spot to come back in."

Santa Anita will implement single scratch time for autumn meet

ARCADIA, Calif. – Santa Anita has enacted a raceday scratch time for its 19-day autumn meeting that begins on Friday, eliminating an early withdrawal stage the day before racing.

Previously, horses could be withdrawn the morning before raceday for reasons such as illness or injury. Another set of scratches were then announced on race morning, often for the same reasons. The new policy of a single scratch time is similar to what is in place at other tracks, according to the track’s vice president of racing, Rick Hammerle.

McLaughlin will send out two in Vosburgh

Barbara D. Livingston
Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin has entered the New York-bred Celtic Chaos in Saturday's Grade 1 Vosburgh at Belmont Park.

ELMONT N.Y. – El Deal will be a heavy favorite in Saturday’s Grade 1, $350,000 Vosburgh Stakes, but the presence of so much speed in the field prompted trainer Kiaran McLaughlin to enter the New York-bred Celtic Chaos in the race. McLaughlin also has Takaful, one of the speed horses in the seven-horse field.

Celtic Chaos is 3 for 5 at Belmont Park, including a last-to-first victory in a field of 12 in the Affirmed Success Stakes here in April. This will be the 21st start for Celtic Chaos and his first against open company.

Elate taking it one turn at a time in Beldame

Barbara D. Livingston
Elate will use Saturday's one-turn, 1 1/8-mile Beldame as a stepping-stone to a potential start in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff.

ELMONT N.Y. – Though she is taking on older females for the first time, Elate, the Grade 1 Alabama winner, will loom a short price in a field of seven entered Wednesday for Saturday’s Grade 1, $400,000 Beldame for fillies and mares.

Though the 3-year-old Elate is probably more effective around two turns, trainer Bill Mott opted to use the one-turn, 1 1/8-mile Beldame as a stepping-stone to a potential start in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff on Nov. 3 at Del Mar. In 2012, Mott won the Beldame with Royal Delta, who then won the Distaff, known then as the Ladies’ Classic.
