Catholic Boy won't make trip for Pilgrim Stakes

Barbara D. Livingston
Catholic Boy ran down maiden Irish Territory to post a one-length victory in Wednesday's Grade 3 With Anticipation at Saratoga.

John Panagot, racing manager for Robert LaPenta, owner of Catholic Boy, said the horse vanned from South Florida to Saratoga and back and that another trip in four weeks “is probably not best for the horse.”

Honorable Duty wins the 2017 New Orleans Handicap.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – If Honorable Duty isn’t careful, he might wind up in world-class events such as the Pegasus Cup and Dubai World Cup.

Brendan Walsh has mapped out a three-race schedule for Honorable Duty to conclude 2017, and although reluctant to get too far ahead of himself, the Irish-born trainer is hoping what happens in the next few months will result in new horizons for his stable star.

“He’s been a great horse for us,” said Walsh, who trains Honorable Duty, a 5-year-old gelding, for the DARRS Inc. of David Ross.

Serpe cites presence of Navarro horse as factor in Vosburgh decision

Barbara D. Livingston
Weekend Hideaway will run back in less than two weeks after finishing third in the Tale of the Cat.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Trainer Phil Serpe is considering running his 7-year-old New York-bred millionaire Weekend Hideaway in Saturday’s Grade 1 Vosburgh at Belmont Park.

One factor Serpe is weighing in his decision is whether he wants to run in a race that includes El Deal, a horse trained by Jorge Navarro.

Navarro has become the subject of much scrutiny since a video appeared of him and one of his owners bragging about potential impropriety and screaming obscenities while at Monmouth Park and watching a horse win a race trained by Navarro’s brother Marcial at Gulfstream Park.

Kroy made the Bear's Den Stakes his third straight victory.

Trainer Armando De la cerda suddenly and somewhat unexpectly had some doors open for Kroy after the red-hot 3-year-old made a dazzling main-track debut at Gulfstream in Sunday’s Bear’s Den Stakes, a race originally carded at 7 1/2 furlongs on the turf but moved to the dirt due to rain.

Kroy led throughout under jockey Emisael Jaramillo to register a 1 1/2-length victory over Zipping, completing seven panels over a track upgraded from sloppy to good in an eye-catching 1:21.69, earning a 90 Beyer Speed Figure in the process.

Gallant Bloom win puts Highway Star on road to Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint

Chelsea Durand/NYRA
Highway Star returned $6.20 in winning the Gallant Bloom at Belmont on Sunday.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Trainer Rodrigo Ubillo said it will be “a dream” to participate in this year’s Breeders’ Cup with Highway Star, who earned her shot in the Filly and Mare Sprint on Nov. 4 with a neck victory in the Grade 2 Gallant Bloom Handicap.

In reality, Highway Star earned her Breeders’ Cup chance before Sunday, but her connections wanted to see another good performance before committing to run. Highway Star wore down Carina Mia by a neck for her third graded stakes victory of the year to go along with a head loss to By the Moon in the Grade 1 Ballerina on Aug. 26 at Saratoga.

Debut winner Candy Crew to stick with sprints

At a time of year when many ambitions for 2-year-olds focus on races around two turns, there are more modest goals for Candy Crew.

Candy Crew won a six-furlong maiden race in his debut Sunday at Los Alamitos, drawing off in the final furlong to prevail by 3 3/4 lengths in 1:10.59. Owners Pete and Kosta Hronis and trainer John Sadler intend to keep Candy Crew sprinting.

“He’s not bred to go on,” Sadler said. “I think he’ll go up to six or seven furlongs.”
