Brown, Pletcher slug it out for training title

Barbara D. Livingston
Trainer Chad Brown will start the possible favorite in five of the seven turf stakes race at Belmont this weekend.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Chad Brown said he’s not as consumed with being the leading trainer at Saratoga this year as perhaps he was last year, when he won his first Saratoga title with a meet-record 40 victories.

Brown entered the final four days of this year’s meet with a 36-35 lead over Todd Pletcher, a 12-time leading trainer at Saratoga. Over the final three days of the meet, Pletcher had 33 horses entered in 25 races, while Brown had 25 horses entered in 16 races. That includes also-eligibles and horses in turf races entered only to run on the main track.

Canterbury boosts purse for Shakopee Juvenile

Coady Photography
Promising 2-year-old filly Amy's Challenge is expected to face males in the Shakopee Juvenile on Sept. 15 at Canterbury Park.

Canterbury Park announced Friday it was raising the purse of the Sept. 16 Shakopee Juvenile from $60,000 to $75,000 and that Minnesota-breds in the race would be eligible for a $100,000 purse.

The six-furlong Shakopee Juvenile is somewhat noteworthy this year because it is expected to attract the very talented 2-year-old filly Amy’s Challenge. Amy’s Challenge beat males in her Aug. 6 career debut, a 16 1/2-length cakewalk victory in a six-furlong Canterbury maiden race that produced a 91 Beyer Speed Figure, the highest 2-year-old number in North America so far this year.
