Booth headed to Whitmore Stakes off big Beyer

Booth earned a meet-topping Beyer Speed Figure of 105 for his win in the Commodore Stakes.

HOT SPRINGS, ARK. – Booth, who earned a meet-best Beyer Speed Figure of 105 last out at Oaklawn, is being pointed to the track’s Grade 3 Whitmore Stakes, trainer Steve Asmussen said.

Booth won the Commodore, a new overnight stakes, in his most recent start in Hot Springs.

◗ Trainer D. Wayne Lukas said plans for recent 3-year-old allowance route winner Bestfriend Rocket are being discussed with owner Frank Fletcher. Lukas said he is still finalizing stakes plans for some of the other quality 3-year-olds he has in the barn this season at Oaklawn.

G W's Girl being considered for Beaumont start

After back-to-back stakes wins at Oaklawn, G W's Girl is possible for a start in the Beaumont at Keeneland.

G W’s Girl, who has won back-to-back sprint stakes at Oaklawn, is being considered for a start in the Grade 2, $400,000 Beaumont for 3-year-old fillies April 6 at Keeneland, according to her trainer, Greg Compton.

G W’s Girl won the $150,000 Mockingbird at six furlongs Jan. 4. She closed from off the pace and one start later raced with the leaders winning the $150,000 Dixie Belle at the same distance Feb. 24. G W’s Girl was the odds-on favorite and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 84.

Free Like a Girl could be nearing retirement after Azeri

Free Like a Girl has won 21of 48 lifetime starts and is the all-time Louisiana-bred leader in earnings.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Free Like a Girl could be making the penultimate start of her career Saturday in the Grade 2, $400,000 Azeri Stakes at Oaklawn Park, according to co-owner and trainer Chasey Deville Pomier.

Free Like a Girl ranks as the all-time-leading earner among Louisiana-breds. She has won 21 of 48 starts for earnings of $2,173,438. Free Like a Girl enters the Azeri off a runner-up finish in the Grade 3 Bayakoa, beaten a head in the Feb. 1 race at Oaklawn. She is shipping back to Arkansas from Delta Downs.

Kentucky Derby 2025: Journalism to return to track after electrifying win

Journalism leapt to the top of the 3-year-old class after this win in the San Felipe Stakes last Saturday at Santa Anita. He earned a 108 Beyer Speed Figure for the effort.

Journalism was scheduled to resume training this week at Santa Anita, weather permitting, after a smashing victory March 1 in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes, his first start since Dec. 14, when he won the Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity. Journalism won the San Felipe with a 108 Beyer Speed Figure, the highest San Felipe figure since California Chrome earned the same figure in 2014.

Even his understated trainer, Michael McCarthy, was impressed with Journalism.

Woodbine has made it official. The date for this year’s 166th running of the $1 million King’s Plate is Saturday, Aug. 16.

Tickets for the opening leg of the Canadian Triple Crown go on sale March 6 on Ticketmaster and at Kingsplate.com. General admission starts at $35, which includes grandstand and apron access, along with entry to the Hats and Horseshoes party that features live music and photo ops.

Brown has seven in turf stakes Saturday

Brown plans to start Saffron Moon in the Grade 2 Hillsborough, a race Brown has won six times.

In addition to his two horses entered for the Tampa Bay Derby, trainer Chad Brown is pointing seven others to stakes on Saturday at Tampa.

In the Grade 2, $225,000 Hillsborough for older turf females on turf, a race Brown has won six times, he plans to run Saffron Moon and Venencia, who ran first and third in the Grade 3 Endeavour on Feb. 1. Additionally, Brown intends to start Spaliday, the 2024 Sands Point winner. The Hillsborough is also expected to attract Sparkle Blue, who won this race last year for trainer Graham Motion.

Baffert plans comebacks for older horses

Nysos won the Grade 3 Robert Lewis Stakes at a mile for 3-year-olds by 7 1/2 lengths in his last start in February 2024.

The 4-year-old Nysos and 5-year-olds Fort Bragg and Speed Boat Beach, all stakes winners, are nearing comebacks for trainer Bob Baffert.

Baffert declined to state race goals for the trio on Sunday morning, but did say, “I’ll have some nice horses this spring.”

Nysos, unbeaten in three starts by a combined 26 3/4 lengths in 2023 and early last year, worked five furlongs in 1:02.40 at Santa Anita on Saturday, his fifth workout in as many weeks.

Sadler seeks first stakes win of meet with Alpha Bella

Alpha Bella was second in the Grade 3 La Canada Stakes at Santa Anita on Jan. 19 behind the undefeated Cavalieri.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Trainer John Sadler will be after his first stakes win since early November when Alpha Bella starts in Saturday’s Grade 1 Beholder Mile for fillies and mares at Santa Anita.

Alpha Bella was withdrawn from the Grade 2 Buena Vista Stakes on turf at Santa Anita last Saturday. A 5-year-old, Alpha Bella worked a half-mile in 47 seconds on Sunday for the $300,000 Beholder Mile.

“She looked beautiful,” Sadler said. “She’s run well on both surfaces and we wanted to look at both races.”

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – While Todd Pletcher’s 3-year-olds still have more to prove to make it to the Kentucky Derby, the Hall of Fame trainer will undoubtedly have a major impact in this year’s older dirt male division.

The performances Saturday by Locked in the Santa Anita Handicap and Mindframe in the Gulfstream Park Mile served as reminders as to just how much talent these 4-year-olds possess.
