New pick seven figures to challenge bettors

AUBURN, Wash. – Among the myriad betting opportunities offered by Emerald Downs, which opens its 2016 meeting Saturday, horseplayers surely will be attracted to the newest one: a pick seven with a minimum 20-cent wager and a relatively low takeout of 16.1 percent.

The pick seven will be offered on the final seven races each day. If there are no tickets with seven winners, 80 percent of the pool will carry over to the next card. The remaining 20 percent will go into a consolation pool and be paid to ticket holders with the most winners.

Limousine Liberal returns in allowance sprint

Nikki Sherman
Limousine Liberal will make his 4-year-old debut in Saturday's second race.

As often happens at Keeneland, there are terrific races besides the graded stakes on opening weekend. The Saturday undercard is particularly rich, with Limousine Liberal among those with stakes experience dipping into the allowance ranks.

Limousine Liberal finished second in the King’s Bishop and Gallant Bob last fall and shows a recent series of bullet works at Keeneland for trainer Ben Colebrook. The 4-year-old Limousine Liberal will be ridden by Luis Saez when making his return in the second race at 6 1/2 furlongs.

Brown plans to run two against Tepin in Jenny Wiley

Michael Amoruso
Dacita wins the Ballston Spa Stakes by a head Saturday at Saratoga.

The big name for the second weekend of racing at Keeneland is Tepin, the Eclipse Award-winning turf mare who will be a big favorite in the Grade 1 Jenny Wiley Stakes on April 16. Trainer Mark Casse contemplated a start against males in the Grade 1 Maker’s 46 Mile on April 15 but said there was “no major compelling reason to jump outside the box at this time.”

Rachel's Valentina, Carina Mia will try to fire fresh in Ashland

Barbara D. Livingston
Rachel's Valentina will be making her first start of the season in Saturday's Ashland.

Cathryn Sophia will be favored Saturday over Rachel’s Valentina and Carina Mia in an eagerly anticipated renewal of the Ashland Stakes at Keeneland partly because of this: She already has raced twice this year, while both of her chief rivals will be making their first starts following significant layoffs.

Siding Spring, Conquest Windycity headed in different directions

Conquest Windycity comes into the Louisiana Derby off an allowance at Oaklawn in his 3-year-old debut.

Trainer Mark Casse has a handful of quality 3-year-olds who wintered at Oaklawn, and with the meet to wrap soon, Siding Spring and Conquest Windycity are heading in different directions.

Casse said Siding Spring, fifth in the Grade 3 Southwest in February at Oaklawn, is now based at Keeneland. He said plans call for a return to turf for the horse, who last year won his debut at Kentucky Downs and proceeded to run third in the Grade 3 Bourbon at Keeneland.

Sarah Sis targets Humana Distaff

Sarah Sis may prefer a slightly longer distance than the six furlongs of the American Beauty.

Sarah Sis, who has wintered at Oaklawn and is now based at Keeneland, is being pointed for the Grade 1 Humana Distaff, according to trainer Ingrid Mason. The seven-furlong race for fillies and mares is on the Kentucky Derby card May 7 at Churchill Downs.

Sarah Sis is a Grade 2 winner at the distance, having taken last year’s Raven Run at Keeneland.

“I was planning on running her in the Madison [at Keeneland], and she got a bit of a fever, so we had to skip that race,” Mason said Tuesday. “She’s doing great now. She’s at Keeneland.”

Awesome Speed entered for two stakes

Barbara D. Livingston
Awesome Speed worked a half-mile in 48.30 seconds at Palm Meadows on Sunday.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Alan Goldberg isn’t exactly sure what he wants to do with his talented 3-year-old Awesome Speed, so he bought himself more time by entering him in both Saturday’s Grade 3, $300,000 Bay Shore Stakes at seven furlongs at Aqueduct and the $100,000 Federico Tesio at 1 1/8 miles at Laurel.

Carter a golden opportunity for Salutos Amigos

Adam Coglianese/NYRA
Tom Fool winner Salutos Amigos will make his next start in the Carter Handicap at Aqueduct.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Salutos Amigos is a gelding, so it won’t help his residual value, but his connections believe he deserves a Grade 1 victory.

“As fast as he is, he definitely deserves to have a Grade 1 under his belt,” said David Jacobson, the trainer and part-owner of Salutos Amigos.

Salutos Amigos will get perhaps his best chance at winning a Grade 1 in Saturday’s $400,000 Carter Handicap at Aqueduct. He enters the Carter off a 2 1/2-length victory in the Grade 3 Tom Fool over the inner track March 12, his fifth Grade 3 stakes victory.
