Willet staying home for Broadway

Barbara D. Livingston
Willet has won four New York-bred stakes but never an open stakes.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – There was some allure for trainer and part-owner Jimmy Iselin to ship Willet to Maryland for Saturday’s Grade 2, $300,000 Barbara Fritchie Stakes at Laurel. A win would have been her first in a graded stakes, and she could have earned enough money to surpass the $1 million mark in purse earnings.

Brooks has trio for John B. Campbell

Classic Giacnroll is one of three starters for trainer Gerald Brooks in Saturday's John B. Campbell at Laurel Park.

Trainer Gerald Brooks has entered three horses for owner Vince Campanella in the $75,000 John B. Campbell Stakes on Saturday at Laurel Park. On Wednesday, he said they all will start.

“Classic Giacnroll and Kobel run against each other all the time and take turns beating each other, so when you run one, you almost have to run the other,” Brooks said.

Brooks also will run Sheikinator, who in his first start for the stable Jan. 30 won a first-level Penn National allowance race by six lengths.

Lady Sabelia's connections hope history repeats itself in Fritchie

Adam Coglianese/NYRA
Lady Sabelia will attempt to win the Barbara Fritchie for the second time on Saturday at Laurel Park.

The Grade 2 Barbara Fritchie at Laurel Park on Saturday has an eerily familiar ring to it. In 2015, the locally based Lady Sabelia faced a red-hot 4-year-old shipper who went off favored. Last year, that role was filled by Sam’s Sister. On Saturday, it will be Hot City Girl.

Even the weather figures to be about the same for this edition of the Fritchie. The coldest temperatures of the season are expected this weekend, just in time for Laurel’s two-day Winter Carnival.

Toews On Ice unlikely to run in San Vicente

Toews On Ice (right) has missed some training time because of a quarter crack, according to trainer Bob Baffert.

ARCADIA, Calif. – A quarter crack is likely to prevent the three-time stakes winner Toews On Ice from starting in Monday’s $200,000 San Vicente Stakes for 3-year-olds at Santa Anita.

Trainer Bob Baffert said on Wednesday that Toews On Ice “missed training time” recently. The colt has had one recorded workout since a sixth-place finish as the 3-5 favorite in the Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn Park on Jan. 18. Toews On Ice worked six furlongs from the gate in 1:14.20 on Feb. 5.

“Right now, I would say no,” Baffert said regarding a start for Toews On Ice on Monday.

Lochte will be given some time off after finishing fourth as the favorite in last month's Fort Lauderdale.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Turf standout Lochte will be getting a few months off after having a three-race win streak snapped when finishing fourth as the favorite in the Grade 2 Fort Lauderdale here at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 9.

“He’s been going at it real hard for a while now,” said trainer Marcus Vitali. “He’s earned some downtime. I’ll probably do the same for Valid [the Donn runner-up] after he runs one more time at this meet.”

Romans shoots for Royal Delta upset with Gamblers Rose

Kenny Martin/Coglianese Photos
Sandivia, an accomplished turf runner, will try to transfer her form to dirt for Saturday's Royal Delta.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – The main story line in the Royal Delta Stakes at Gulfstream Park will focus on whether Sandiva can make the same remarkable turf-to-dirt transition pulled off recently by her Al Shaqab Racing stablemate Mshawish.

There are opposing trainers who will do their best to foil that. One is Dale Romans, who will send out Gamblers Rose as one of the longer shots in the Grade 2, $200,000 Royal Delta, which will be run Saturday as the only graded race here between now and Fountain of Youth Day on Feb. 27.

Reopening of Parx track pushed back; Friday training possible

Parx Racing had been scheduled to reopen for training on Thursday but that will not be possible after the area received 2 to 3 inches of snow early Wednesday. The snow melted quickly and the surface became too wet for track superintendent Gerard Weipert to make necessary repairs to the base of the track along the inner rail, according to Sam Elliott, the director of racing at Parx.
