Code Warrior learning from California Oaks defeat

Shane Micheli/Vassar Photography
Code Warrior wins the 2015 Golden Gate Debutante.

Trainer Manny Badilla was philosophical about Code Warrior’s fourth-place finish in her route debut in last Saturday’s California Oaks. The favored 3-year-old filly lost for the first time at Golden Gate Fields.

“I knew when we drew the rail it was trouble in River City,” he said. “It was very educational for her to get pinned down on the rail.”

Although she seemed capable of taking the lead based on her sprint fractions, jockey Anne Sanguinetti kept her off the pace.

Touched by Autism helps Taboada raise awareness

Shigeki Kikkawa
Touched by Autism is possible for Saturday's El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields.

In 2008, a Cinderella story unfolded for owner Johnny Taboada in the Grade 3 El Camino Real Derby when Autism Awareness, the longest shot on the board, scored the biggest upset ($126) in the race’s history.

Autism Awareness, a $1,000 purchase at the Northern California yearling sale in Pleasanton, was not a one-hit wonder. The next year, he won a four-way photo in the Grade 3 Berkeley, beating millionaires Bold Chieftain and Awesome Gem. He earned $356,732 in his career.

Big three have Desormeaux expecting another great year

Barbara D. Livingston
Texas Red is one of a trio of horses that could lead trainer Keith Desormeaux to another milestone year.

Desormeaux won the first Grade 1 race and the first seven-figure race of his career when Texas Red won the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita in 2014. Last year, his stable had record single-season earnings of $3,834,257, ranking 34th in the nation.

Three of the principal runners from 2015 – Exaggerator, Swipe, and Texas Red – are the core of what could be another milestone season this year.

Santa Anita Handicap appealing spot for Imperative

Shigeki Kikkawa
Unlike San Antonio winner Hoppertunity and third-place Donworth, who are headed to the Dubai World Cup, runner-up Imperative (7) will stay home for the Santa Anita Handicap.

ARCADIA, Calif. - The $500,690 San Antonio Stakes at Santa Anita on Saturday was as much a prep for the $10 million Dubai World Cup in the United Arab Emirates on March 26 as it was a prep for the $1 million Santa Anita Handicap on March 12.

Hoppertunity and Donworth, who finished first and third, are candidates for the Dubai World Cup, their trainers said. Imperative, beaten a nose by Hoppertunity after a troubled trip, will run in the Big Cap, trainer Richard Baltas said.
