Nyquist works mile preparing for San Vicente

ARCADIA, Calif. – Nyquist is picking up in 2016 where he left off in 2015, at least in the morning.

The champion 2-year-old of 2015 after winning all five starts, including the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, Nyquist posted a solid one-mile workout Sunday at Santa Anita and is on target for a Feb. 15 comeback in the Grade 2, seven-furlong San Vicente Stakes.

Smokey Image tunes up for California Cup Derby

ARCADIA, Calif. - Smokey Image, the unbeaten California-bred 3-year-old, worked seven furlongs in 1:26.60 on Saturday for a scheduled start in the $250,000 California Cup Derby at Santa Anita on Jan. 30.

Victor Espinoza was aboard for the workout.

Trainer Carla Gaines said on Saturday she would make a final decision on Smokey Image’s participation in the California Cup Derby for statebreds at the beginning of the week.

Hoppertunity joins probables for San Antonio

ARCADIA, Calif. - Hoppertunity, the three-time stakes winner who finished third in the Grade 2 San Pasqual Stakes on Jan. 9, is being pointed for the $500,000 San Antonio Stakes at Santa Anita on Feb. 6.

Trainer Bob Baffert said on Saturday that the Grade 2 San Antonio Stakes at 1 1/8 miles could be a prep to the $10 million Dubai World Cup at Meydan Racecourse in the United Arab Emirates on March 26 for the 5-year-old Hoppertunity.

“I think he’ll like that track,” Baffert said of the dirt surface at Meydan.

Von Hemel has two prospects apiece for Southwest, Martha Washington

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – The promising 2-year-olds whom trainer Donnie Von Hemel unveiled last season in Kentucky and Oklahoma have blossomed into formidable 3-year-olds for the stakes program at Oaklawn Park.

Synchrony, Suddenbreakingnews, My Master Plan, and Ready to Confess are all on pace to see action in either the Grade 3, $500,000 Southwest on Feb. 15 or the $100,000 Martha Washington for fillies Feb. 6.

“We’ve been very fortunate through the fall and into the beginning of this year [that] our young horses have really run well for us,” said Von Hemel.

Donegal Moon works for Withers

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Donegal Moon, who stumbled and unseated his rider at the start of the Grade 3 Jerome here Jan. 2, worked a half-mile in 49.53 seconds Friday over the Belmont Park training track in preparation for next Saturday’s Grade 3 Withers.

Donegal Moon, working on the inside of stablemate Picozza, went his first quarter in 25.22 seconds and his last quarter in 24.31 over a dull training track. He galloped out five furlongs in 1:02.64.

Belmont Stakes ticket sales start next week

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Tickets for the June 11 Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park go on sale next week, and depending on when you purchase them and where you want to sit, you could be paying the same or as much as 50 percent more than a year ago.

Grandstand general admission will begin at $15 – the same price as last year – but only until Preakness Day. Thereafter, the price goes up to $20, and if any walk-up tickets remain, the price will be $25 on race day. Clubhouse general admission starts at $50 – $10 more than in 2015 – with the price rising to $60 on race day.

NYRA CFO has resigned

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Susanne Stover has resigned from her position as chief financial officer for the New York Racing Association. Her last day was Jan. 15.

Two sources said Stover was taking a similar position with Johnny Rockets, the restaurant chain headquartered in Southern California. Before coming to NYRA, Stover worked for two restaurant chains, including California Pizza Kitchen.

Stover was hired by NYRA in February 2012 and replaced Ellen McClain, who had been elevated from CFO to chief executive of NYRA.

Dylan Davis out 3-4 months with shoulder injury

Dylan Davis tore the labrum of his left shoulder and will undergo surgery.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Jockey Dylan Davis will be out three to four months after sustaining a tear in the labrum of his left shoulder in a spill last Sunday at Aqueduct. Davis will undergo surgery to repair the shoulder within the next week to 10 days, according to his agent, Nick Soulis.

Davis, 21, was one of three jockeys unseated in Sunday’s last race. Anthony Suarez was unseated when his mount, Thirty Percent, clipped heels with the horse on the lead. He fractured his sternum and will be out about a month, according to trainer Mark Tasso, for whom Suarez rides in the morning.

Found Money alters routine prepping for Cal Cup Derby

ARCADIA, Calif. – The two-time stakes winner Found Money had a different exercise program Friday in advance of the $250,000 California Cup Derby at Santa Anita on Jan. 30.

Trained by Doug O’Neill, Found Money galloped a half-mile in 1:00.40 before working a half-mile in 49.60 seconds. The workout is expected to be Found Money’s last major exercise before the Cal Cup Derby at 1 1/16 miles.

Penwith easily wins return race

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin was extremely pleased with the performance of Penwith here Thursday. Penwith returned from an 11-month layoff to register a two-length allowance victory over the graded-stakes-placed Stiffed under confident handling by jockey Joel Rosario.

“It was a great effort off a long layoff,” said McLaughlin.

The Grade 2 stakes-placed Penwith had been sidelined because of a small ankle chip.

“With the time off, she’s matured into a real beautiful mare,” said McLaughlin. “Hopefully, we have a stakes filly on our hands.”
