Disruptor to miss Met Mile with illness

Disruptor, second in the Churchill Downs Stakes, will miss the Met Mile with an illness.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Disruptor, runner-up to T O Elvis in the Grade 1 Churchill Downs Stakes on May 2, will miss the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap due to an illness, trainer Todd Pletcher confirmed on Friday.

“He got sick after his race at Churchill. We ended up missing a week of training, he’s just not ready in time,” Pletcher said.

Disruptor, who before the Churchill Downs won the Grade 3 Challenger Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs, has resumed galloping. Pletcher isn’t sure exactly where Disruptor would run next.

Clement audibles to dirt work for Deterministic

Deterministic, who will look to repeat in the Manhattan, worked five furlongs on dirt in 1:01.92 Friday morning.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Trainer Miguel Clement had originally planned on putting Deterministic on the Oklahoma turf course Friday for his final work in preparation for a defense of his title a week from Saturday in the Grade 1 Manhattan. But after taking a little run over the turf himself on Thursday evening, Clement opted to call an audible, instead breezing his Eclipse Award finalist on the Oklahoma dirt, going five furlongs in a very impressive 1:01.92 per Daily Racing Form.

Vive Veuve will point to Anchorage at Churchill

Vive Veuve was up for a half-length win in the Ouija Board and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 79.

Vive Veuve, who rallied up the rail to win the off-the-turf $200,000 Ouija Board Distaff in her dirt debut Monday at Lone Star Park, has returned home to Churchill Downs, according to her trainer, Joe Sharp.

Sharp said she will be considered for the $275,000 Anchorage, a 1 1/8 miles turf race for fillies and mares on June 27 at Churchill.

Vive Veuve was up for a half-length win in the Ouija Board and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 79 while making her first start since November.

Plans to be determined for Desert Gate

Desert Gate has shipped into Bob Baffert's division at Churchill Downs, with plans for his next start to be determined.

Desert Gate won his second consecutive stakes in the $300,000 Texas Derby on Monday at Lone Star Park. After his strong effort, all options are on the table going forward, trainer Bob Baffert said Thursday.

“If the Preakness was in two weeks, I’d be there,” Baffert quipped. “He’s ready for the Preakness now!”

Desert Gate shipped in from Baffert’s Southern California base and won the Texas Derby by 6 1/4 lengths one start after capturing the Hot Springs Stakes at a mile at Oaklawn Park. He earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 92 in the 1 1/16-mile Texas Derby.

Dirt the key to Thermal's scorching Beyer

Thermal began racing on dirt on a regular basis in October for trainer John Sadler.

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – Thermal turned up the heat Monday at Lone Star Park, earning a career-high Beyer Speed Figure of 106 for her win in the $100,000 Memorial Day Sprint. The Beyer is tied for the third-highest by a filly or mare on dirt this year in North America.

Trainer John Sadler said Thermal has stepped up her game since she began racing on dirt. She won the Memorial Day Sprint by 8 1/4 lengths, covering six furlongs in 1:08.56 on a track that had just been upgraded from good to fast.

O'Neill reveals plans for Pavlovian, Decisive Win

Pavlovian is scheduled to have his next start in the Grade 3 Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs on June 7.

Trainer Doug O’Neill has tentative plans for two prominent 3-year-olds in his barn – Pavlovian and Decisive Win.

Pavlovian, winner of the $500,000 Sunland Derby in New Mexico in February but last of 18 in the Kentucky Derby, is scheduled to have his next start in the Grade 3 Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs on June 7. The $500,000 race is run at 1 1/16 miles for 3-year-olds.

Pavlovian is part of O’Neill’s stable in Kentucky.

Fewer dates should mean fatter fields as Fort Erie meet opens

The highlight of Fort Erie's meet is The highlight of meet is the 91st running of the $400,000 Prince of Wales Stakes.

Fort Erie’s 129th season, a 34-day meet that is significantly shorter than the border track’s traditional 40-day stand, kicks off on Sunday. Racing runs through Oct. 20 on a mostly Monday/Tuesday schedule beginning in late June, following a series of Sunday cards.

James Culic, Fort Erie’s manager of marketing and corporate communications, said the plan is to run the same number of races as in the past while strategically making the best of a declining horse population.

Tyler Baze was suspended for one day and fined $500 for striking Come On Om seven times, one over the permitted limit.

Jockeys Tyler Baze, Kazushi Kimura, and Joel Rosario have been suspended for recent riding violations, according to rulings published within the last week.

Baze has been suspended one day, on June 5, and fined $500 for striking Come On Om seven times in the ninth race on May 17, one over the permitted limit. Come On Om finished second by a nose in a maiden race for California-bred fillies and mares.

Mrs. Astor retired, bred to Upstart

Beginning in the fall of 2024, Mrs. Astor won six turf stakes in a span of eight starts at Del Mar and Santa Anita.

The six-time stakes winner Mrs. Astor was recently retired and bred to Upstart, trainer Jonathan Thomas said earlier this month.

A 6-year-old mare, Mrs. Astor won 8 of 24 starts and earned $649,472 for owner and breeder George Strawbridge, Jr.’s Augustin Stable. By Lookin at Lucky, Mrs. Astor thrived in distance turf races for fillies and mares in Southern California.

Beginning in the fall of 2024, she won six turf stakes in a span of eight starts at Del Mar and Santa Anita, including the Grade 3 Red Carpet Stakes at 1 3/8 miles at Del Mar in 2024 and last November.

Gold Phoenix to San Juan Capistrano Stakes

Gold Phoenix has won 11 times and earned $2,377,087.

Gold Phoenix, winner of the Grade 3 San Luis Rey Stakes in March and eight other stakes in his lengthy career, is scheduled to start in the Grade 3 San Juan Capistrano Stakes at Santa Anita on June 14.

The $100,000 San Capistrano Stakes is run at about 1 3/4 miles on turf, the longest stakes in California, and is the closing-day feature of the track’s spring meeting. Los Alamitos begins a three-week meeting on June 19.

An 8-year-old, Gold Phoenix has started in 25 stakes in his 32-race career but has never run in the San Juan Capistrano.
