Brown works six Breeders' Cup prospects on turf

ELMONT, N.Y. - As it pertained to the Breeders’ Cup, it was all about the turf Sunday at Belmont Park with 11 horses with designs on running in a Breeders’ Cup grass race in less than two weeks putting in workouts on a cold, clear morning on Long Island.

Eight of those horses utilized the Belmont turf course for their works while three others breezed on dirt. Some of the 11 are not guaranteed a spot in the Breeders’ Cup and may not find out their fate until pre-entries are announced on Wednesday.

Private Zone backs off gate move, works from pole Sunday morning

Breeders' Cup Sprint favorite Private Zone was scheduled to work from the gate Sunday morning at host track Keeneland, but trainer Jorge Navarro called a late audible, instead working the gelding in a brisk 59 seconds from the pole on the watch of Daily Racing Form clocker Mike Welsch.

Gutierrez goes 5 for 5 on Friday mounts

ARCADIA, Calif. – With a little help from the stewards, jockey Mario Gutierrez was perfect with five mounts Friday at Santa Anita, the second time in his career he has recorded five victories on a program.

Gutierrez, best known for winning the 2012 Kentucky Derby on I’ll Have Another, had five wins at Hastings Park in British Columbia in May 2008.

Hard Aces picks up Talamo for BC Classic

ARCADIA, Calif. – Joe Talamo will ride the longshot Hard Aces in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland on Oct. 31, trainer John Sadler said Saturday.

Sadler was in need of a rider for Hard Aces, a Grade 1 winner in June, after jockey Victor Espinoza committed to riding Triple Crown winner American Pharoah. Talamo was a leading choice for Sadler because of their recent success together. Earlier this month, Talamo rode the Sadler-trained Ben’s Duchess to a win in the LA Woman Stakes, a prep for the BC Filly and Mare Sprint at Keeneland.

Tonalist, Red Vine among Breeders' Cup workers

ELMONT, N.Y. – After watching two of his four potential Breeders’ Cup horses put in workouts Saturday morning at Belmont Park, trainer Christophe Clement had reason to be both happy and frustrated.

Clement was very happy with the moves Tonalist (Breeders’ Cup Classic) and Red Vine (Dirt Mile) put in over the Belmont main track. He was frustrated that for the 10th consecutive year, he and his fellow New York trainers have to ship to run in the Breeders’ Cup. This year’s event will be held at Keeneland for the first time.

Bradester, I'm a Chatterbox work for Breeders' Cup

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile contender Bradester heated up stopwatches on a cold Saturday morning at Keeneland, turning in a sharp five-furlong move that had trainer Eddie Kenneally pleased with how his charge handled the track.

Daily Racing Form clocker Mike Welsch caught Bradester and jockey Corey Lanerie in 59.01 seconds as they finished several lengths ahead of workmate Ready Get Set. He galloped out six furlongs in 1:12.23.

Limousine Liberal works his way into BC Sprint

LEXINGTON, Ky. – There was a chill in the air when the track opened for training at Keeneland early Friday morning, with colder weather yet to come this weekend at the host site for the 2015 Breeders’ Cup.

Nine potential Breeders’ Cup starters breezed over a fast track on Friday, and Limousine Liberal and Sticksstatelydude were all but confirmed for the Sprint and Juvenile, respectively, by the time they had finished cooling out after their works.
