On Saturday, Warren’s Veneda starts in her third Grade 1 race of the year in the $300,000 Clement Hirsch Stakes for fillies and mares at Del Mar. Trainer Craig Lewis is braced for a loss, though not because of Warren’s Veneda’s recent setbacks.

Runhappy brings big Beyer into allowance sprint

Courtesy of Maria Borell
Trainer Maria Borell (standing) says if Runhappy runs well in Friday's allowance sprint he will be pointed to a stakes.

It’s not often a horse with a triple-digit Beyer Speed Figure in his most recent start shows up in an allowance race at Ellis Park, but that will be the case Friday when Runhappy makes the fourth start of his enigmatic career.

“We thought about a stakes for him and even nominated him to the Amsterdam at Saratoga,” said Maria Borell, who trains Runhappy for Jim McIngvale. “But he still does things a little green that he couldn’t afford if he ran in a big race like that. The timing is right at Ellis, and if he runs big again Friday, we’ll go in a stakes next time.”
