Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., will offer two races for 2-year-olds in mid-July that will bar horses from using the anti-bleeding medication furosemide on raceday, the track said on Thursday.
ELMONT, N.Y. – Slumber, who finally broke through to capture his first graded stakes when he won the Grade 1 Manhattan last weekend at Belmont Park, will be pointed to the Grade 1 Arlington Million on Aug. 15, trainer Chad Brown said Thursday.
Brown said he would consider running Slumber once before the Arlington Million, perhaps in the Grade 1 United Nations at Monmouth Park on July 5.
Slumber had lost 10 consecutive races before the Manhattan, four since being acquired at auction by a group headed by Michael Dubb and turned over to Brown.
ELMONT, N.Y. – Trainer Shug McGaughey isn’t sure what distance will ultimately prove to be the best for his Metropolitan Handicap winner, Honor Code. But he will give the ridgling a chance to prove himself against top-quality competition around two turns when he runs him next in the Grade 1, $1.25 million Whitney Stakes on Aug. 8 at Saratoga.
ELMONT, N.Y. – Sweet Reason, a three-time Grade 1-winning filly and earner of more than $1.4 million, has been retired due to a tendon injury, her trainer, Leah Gyarmati, said Thursday.
The injury was discovered shortly after Sweet Reason’s fourth-place finish in the Grade 1 Humana Distaff at Churchill Downs on May 2, her only start this year.
“She came out of the race at Churchill with a little strain of her tendon,” Gyarmati said. “Nothing horrible; enough not to risk doing anything more with her.”
Trainer Bret Calhoun is having a strong season with his 2-year-olds, and a handful of them are eyeing upcoming stakes. Ship Rock, who accounted for Calhoun’s 2,500th training win when capturing a maiden special weight May 30 at Lone Star Park, is a candidate for the Grade 3, $100,000 Bashford Manor on June 27 at Churchill Downs.
Calhoun likes the race’s six-furlong distance for the horse, who closed with determination for a half-length win in his debut. For the effort, Ship Rock earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 60.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Bob Baffert will be on hand Saturday night at Churchill Downs to pick up his engraved trophy for winning the Kentucky Derby six weeks beforehand with American Pharoah.
While he’s at it, Baffert just might pick up another Grade 1 trophy when he sends out Hoppertunity and Cat Burglar in the $500,000 Stephen Foster Handicap, the annual post-Derby highlight of the Churchill spring meet.
ARCADIA, Calif. – Big Macher will not travel to Royal Ascot for the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee, trainer Richard Baltas said on Wednesday. The winner of the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar last July, Big Macher had been under consideration for the June 20 sprint.
Big Macher finished fourth in the $2 million Golden Shaheen for sprinters in Dubai on March 28. He has been training with Wesley Ward at Arlington Park and will return to Southern California in the coming days.
The decision not to send Big Macher was made on Tuesday, Baltas said.
ARCADIA, Calif. – Talco, the winner of the Thunder Road Stakes in April, faces the most difficult test of his career in Saturday’s $400,000 Shoemaker Mile. He is part of a probable small field in the Grade 1 turf race, which is expected to be led by the star Brazilian import Bal a Bali and Midnight Storm, who won the Del Mar Derby last August.
Midnight Storm may hold the advantage in the race as the expected pacesetter. Talco is a closer who could be hampered by a slow pace, trainer John Sadler said.
ARCADIA, Calif. – Firing Line, the runner-up in the Kentucky Derby on May 2, missed four days of training last week because of a sore foot, a setback that could delay his next start, trainer Simon Callaghan said on Wednesday.
Firing Line was scheduled to work over the weekend, but the exercise was postponed. Callaghan said Firing Line could work in the coming days, and a start in the $350,000 Los Alamitos Derby on July 4 is “50-50.”
Callaghan emphasized that Firing Line’s setback was brief.
