Devine Aida joins Gulfstream Oaks cast

Barbara D. Livingston
The versatile filly Devine Aida will try to extend her winning streak to five races in the Gulfstream Park Oaks.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Devine Aida seemed destined for graded stakes on turf. Then the skies opened up, and heavy rain forced the Feb. 28 Herecomesthebride Stakes from turf to dirt.

When Devine Aida romped to a 6 3/4-length victory in the Herecomesthebride, it opened up further dirt possibilities for the daughter of Unbridled’s Song. On Wednesday, she was supplemented to Saturday’s Grade 2, $250,000 Gulfstream Park Oaks, one of seven stakes on the undercard of Saturday’s 14-race Florida Derby program.

I'm a Chatterbox to face 7 in Fair Grounds Oaks

Lou Hodges Jr./Hodges Photography
Florent Geroux has been aboard I'm a Chatterbox for two stakes victories at the Fair Grounds meet.

NEW ORLEANS – I'm a Chatterbox went off at 8-1 when she led all the way to win the Silverbulletday Stakes by eight lengths, and she was a 3-1 favorite when she stormed from behind to win the Grade 3 Rachel Alexandra by 2 1/2 lengths.

She'll likely be an odds-on favorite when she breaks from the No.  6 post in an eight-filly field running Saturday in the $400,000, Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks on the Louisiana Derby undercard.

Blue Grass likely target for Ocho Ocho Ocho

Barbara D. Livingston
Ocho Ocho Ocho is more like to run in the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland than the Santa Anita Derby.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Ocho Ocho Ocho, the winner of the $1 million Delta Jackpot Stakes in Louisiana last November but eighth in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes on March 7, is likely to run in the $1 million Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland on April 4.

Trainer Jim Cassidy said on Wednesday that he is “probably leaning toward Keeneland” as opposed to a start in the $1 million Santa Anita Derby the same day. The Blue Grass Stakes and Santa Anita Derby are run at 1 1/8 miles and are key preps for Triple Crown races.

Euro Charline back from extended layoff for Dubai Turf

Four-Footed Fotos
Euro Charline, winner of the Beverly D. Stakes, will return off an extended layoff Saturday in the Dubai Turf at Meydan Racecourse.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – On Aug. 16 at Arlington, Euro Charline won the Grade 1 Beverly D. Stakes by three-quarters of a length over the excellent mare Stephanie’s Kitten. She has yet to perform an encore.

Racing for trainer Marco Botti at Arlington, Euro Charline was transferred to Todd Pletcher for a North American fall campaign but suffered a setback and never raced for Pletcher. Instead, she was returned to England and rejoined Botti’s barn. On Saturday, she makes her first start since the Beverly D. in the $6 million Dubai Turf.

California Chrome lands outside in Dubai World Cup

Mathea Kelley/Dubai Racing Club
California Chrome, with Dana Barnes up, breezes about a half-mile Tuesday at Meydan in preparation for the Dubai World Cup.

The California-bred with the humble pedigree and the first-time, one-in-a-million owners always has been a racing outsider, and so it will be Saturday night at Meydan Racecourse when California Chrome breaks from post 9 in the $10 million Dubai World Cup.

Upstart to begin from outside post in Florida Derby

Barbara D. Livingston
Ami's Flatter, a debut winner at Woodbine last year, most recently was second in the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Upstart, the 8-5 morning line favorite, drew the outside post in a field of nine for Saturday’s Grade 1, $1 million Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park. The 1 1/8-mile Florida Derby will be run as the final race on a marathon 14-race program which begins at noon.

Trainer Rick Violette was clearly not pleased with Upstart’s post, especially because there is a short run to the first turn in races run at 1 1/8 miles at Gulfstream.
