For Graham, Fair Grounds title tinged with sadness

Tom Keyser
James Graham, aboard Jessica's Star, has a new agent in Frank Bernis because Britt McGehee, who booked his mounts for years, is seriously ill.

James Graham should be on top of the world.

With 90 wins at this meet, he is 25 up on the second-place rider in the Fair Grounds colony, and Graham is a 1-9 favorite to win his first Fair Grounds riding title after finishing second or third in the standings the last six seasons.

Jim McCue/Maryland Jockey Club
Jockey Trevor McCarthy has been sidelined since being thrown following the finish of a race at Laurel Park on Dec. 20.

This has been a very long winter, just ask Trevor McCarthy.

McCarthy, the leading rider in Maryland, broke his right wrist during the gallop-out following a race at Laurel Park on Dec. 20. He will resume riding Thursday at Gulfstream Park, where he has three mounts.

“The last couple of months have been some of the most boring in my life,” McCarthy said. “I did some nice things. I visited my family in Florida. I went to upstate New York and visited my grandparents, but it’s been hard.”
