Lecomte winner International Star heads eight probables for the Feb. 21 Risen Star Stakes.

NEW ORLEANS – The Risen Star Stakes has taken a couple of body blows, the latest being the news this week that Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Texas Red won’t be coming from California because of a foot abscess.

Texas Red, who began his 2015 season with a runner-up finish in the seven-furlong San Vicente Stakes at Santa Anita, was being pointed to the Feb. 21 Risen Star at Fair Grounds by trainer Keith Desormeaux. Instead, he has sent the colt to a California farm for treatment, recovery, and swimming.

Bobbi Grace was sent off at even-money Jan. 16 and pulled clear late to win by 1 1/4 lengths.

Coup de Grace, other Jones horses work impressively

Tom Keyser
Coup de Grace could start sometime at the Fair Grounds meet, according to trainer Larry Jones.

Larry Jones has trained good horses for a long time, but it’s possible that he’s never looked down his shed row and seen quite the depth of talent that exists right now at Fair Grounds.

Jones has several horses pointed to the multi-stakes day of racing Feb. 21 at Fair Grounds, and there is more still coming down the pipeline. Coup de Grace, unraced since last fall, is working toward his 4-year-old debut. Normandy Invasion is galloping and jogging, on his way back from an injury that sidelined him early last summer.
