Champion apprentice Van Dyke scores first win as journeyman

ARCADIA, Calif. – Drayden Van Dyke, the champion apprentice jockey of 2014, had his first win as a journeyman Friday aboard the 3-year-old Ernest Shackleton.

Van Dyke, 20, may have a stakes horse in Ernest Shackleton, a candidate for turf stakes in March and April. Ernest Shackleton, imported from Ireland last fall, won for the first time in the U.S. on Friday. The colt is trained by Doug O’Neill.

Van Duke downplayed the move from apprentice to journeyman. Ernest Shackleton was the 199th win of his career.

“I’m just happy to win,” he said.

Firing Line works toward Robert Lewis Stakes

ARCADIA, Calif. – Firing Line, second Dec. 20 in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Futurity, worked five furlongs in 1:00.60 Saturday.

Owned by Arnold Zetcher and trained by Simon Callaghan, Firing Line is a candidate for the $150,000 Robert Lewis Stakes at 1 1/16 miles Feb. 7.

The workout was slower than a five-furlong clocking by Firing Line in 59.80 seconds Jan. 17, which Callaghan said was by design.

“He went strongly the week before so went a little on the easy side,” Callaghan said. “He was nice and relaxed, and that’s the main thing.”

Multiple horses with strong bloodlines in maiden event

The pedigrees of the 3-year-old fillies in the eighth race here at Gulfstream Park on Sunday, a 6 1/2-furlong maiden race, don’t get much richer.

Among the field of 13 are first-time starters Pin Up, a Tapit filly whose dam, Cara Rafaela, produced the great racehorse and sire Bernardini; Regia Marina, a Medaglia d’Oro filly whose dam, Fleet Lady, produced 2008 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Midshipman; and Fast Moon, a fast-working first foal from a mare whose female line includes Inside Information and Educated Risk.

Little Mike taking extended vacation

Owner-trainer Carlo Vaccarezza says unless Little Mike shows he is 100 percent following 60 days on a farm, he will not race again.

Any chance of Little Mike returning to action here at Gulfstream Park this winter ended earlier this month when owner-trainer Carlo Vaccarezza sent the four-time Grade 1 winner back to the farm in Ocala. Vaccarezza had Little Mike in training here throughout the fall and got him up to an open gallop on the turf in mid-December and a three-furlong breeze over the main track on Christmas Eve before opting to postpone his star’s comeback once again.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – The triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures that Carve, Code West, and Ivan Fallunovalot earned in their most recent starts might lead their connections to pass on the next round of races for their divisions at Oaklawn Park.
