HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – The outcome might not have been quite what he’d hoped for, but trainer Todd Pletcher was very pleased nonetheless with the performance turned in by Commissioner here Saturday in his first appearance since his second-place finish in the 2014 Belmont Stakes.

Commissioner finished third, beaten a head and a neck by Ulanbator and Looking Cool, going 1 1/16 miles under second-level allowance conditions on Saturday. Commissioner contested the pace from the outset and held gamely once relinquishing the lead at the top of the stretch.

OLDSMAR, Fla. - Fernando De La Cruz got off to a quick start at last year’s meeting and had a big lead in the rider standings when he suffered a broken wrist in a spill in late December, an injury that ended his hopes for winning the riding title for the 2013-14 meeting.

OLDSMAR, Fla. – Saturday’s $100,000 Turf Dash had been run 10 times before Saturday’s edition, and jockey Daniel Centeno had been aboard the winner in four of those races.

So you would think it would take a pretty fast runner to impress Centeno, a five-time Tampa riding champion. But the turn of speed Bold Thunder displayed for Centeno en route to a dazzling victory in Saturday’s Turf Dash had the rider shaking his head in wonder.

Bold Thunder wired a good field in track-record time to take the five-furlong Turf Dash by more than three lengths.

ARCADIA, Calif. – The 4-year-old fillies Sam’s Sister and Dancinthenightaway, both sharp winners in late December, are being considered for two Grade 2 races worth $200,000 next weekend – the La Canada Stakes for 4-year-old fillies over 1 1/16 miles Saturday or the Santa Monica Stakes against older fillies and mares over seven furlongs Jan. 19.

On Sunday, Jerry Hollendorfer, who trains Sam’s Sister, and Mark Glatt, who trains Dancinthenightaway, said they will wait until midweek before finalizing plans.

ARCADIA, Calif. – The first stakes win and first win of Calculator’s career in Saturday’s $100,750 Sham Stakes at Santa Anita has left trainer Peter Miller debating how quickly to plan another start for the highly regarded 3-year-old.

As of Sunday, Miller was considering two options over 1 1/16 miles – the $150,000 Robert Lewis Stakes on Feb. 7 or the $400,000 San Felipe Stakes on March 7. Both races have recent winners who went on to win the Kentucky Derby.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Private Zone, a two-time Grade 1 winner in 2014 and a finalist for an Eclipse Award as the nation's premier sprinter, will be trained by Jorge Navarro when he returns to the races in 2015.

Rene Douglas, who manages Private Zone for the Good Friends Stable LLC, said the horse will leave Goldmark Farm in Ocala, where he has been freshened since his victory in the Grade 1 Cigar Mile, and van to Navarro's barn at Gulfstream Park West on Tuesday.

ARCADIA, Calif. – California Chrome continued his pattern of strong works in preparation for next month’s San Antonio Stakes when he went six furlongs Saturday morning in 1:11.60 at Los Alamitos. The time was the fastest of 16 works at the distance.

 Art Sherman, the trainer of California Chrome, had him galloping out seven furlongs in 1:25.40.

 Per usual, regular rider Victor Espinoza was aboard for the work, and California Chrome went by himself.  Sherman put blinkers on California Chrome for the work, “which I do when I want him to work faster,” Sherman said.

AUBURN, Wash. - Emerald Downs on Friday announced the creation of an incentive program designed to attract stables to the Seattle-area track. The five-point program includes increased participation fees, and concessions that will lower trainer overhead.

With New York facing another day of cold, Saturday’s live racing program at Aqueduct was canceled, the fourth straight day that all or part of a card was scrapped.

Saturday’s card included the $100,000 Busanda Stakes for 3-year-old fillies, a race that has been rescheduled for Friday. It will be re-drawn on Sunday.

Aqueduct and Belmont Park were to remain open for simulcasting Saturday and it was hoped that racing would resume on Sunday when temperatures were expected to be in the 30s.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - The deaths of 11 Thoroughbreds during the first 20 days of Aqueduct’s winter meet has New York Racing Association officials contemplating a change to the winter schedule.
