Plesa bids farewell to stable star Itsmyluckyday

Tom Keyser
The 4-year-old Itsmyluckyday will be retired following his start in next weekend's Cigar Mile at Aqueduct.

MIAMI – There will be a lot of long faces around trainer Eddie Plesa Jr.’s barn at Gulfstream Park West on Monday when stable star Itsmyluckyday boards a van that will take him to New York. Itsmyluckyday is scheduled to make the final start of his career next Saturday at Aqueduct in the Grade 1 Cigar Mile.

Spendthrift Farm has acquired the breeding rights to Itsmyluckyday, who will stand stud at the farm in Lexington, Ky., next season. That means Plesa and his crew will bid adieu to the Grade 1 winner for the final time on Monday.

NEW ORLEANS – On a recent morning on the Fair Grounds backstretch, trainer Keith Desormeaux was stopped a few times by colleagues congratulating him for winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile with Texas Red.

“This is the area that I’ve frequented the most,” said Desormeaux, 47, who is from Maurice, La., and has made Fair Grounds his winter base for many years. “To see a guy like me sneak up there and win such an important race, it’s fun. It’s what we bust our ass for.”

Reneesgotzip retired

Benoit & Associates
Reneesgotzip, who is likely the current tepid future-book favorite for the BC Turf Sprint, will get another test on Santa Anita's downhill turf course in the Grade 3, $100,000 Eddie D Stakes.

The outstanding sprint mare Reneesgotzip has been retired, trainer Peter Miller said Thursday.

Reneesgotzip, age 5, finished ninth in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint on Nov. 1 in her last start. That completed a career in which she won eight times in 16 starts and earned $869,860. The daughter of City Zip is owned by Debbie Lanni.

Hoppertunity among eight probables for Clark Handicap

Barbara D. Livingston
Hoppertunity was scratched from last Saturday's Kentucky Derby.

Unlike last year, when the Clark Handicap was a factor in Eclipse Awards voting, the Grade 1 race does not figure to have any championship ramifications when it is run next Friday (Nov. 28) fat Churchill Downs for the 141st time.

Trainer Bob Baffert confirmed Wednesday that he intends to send Hoppertunity for the $500,000 Clark. Hoppertunity, most recently a fast-closing second in an Oct. 29 allowance at Santa Anita, will be ridden by Rafael Bejarano when stretching out to 1 1/8 miles in the Clark.

Well Measured facing tall order in return from layoff

DEL MAR, Calif. – Well Measured has shown he can fire fresh – witness his victory first time out back in January at Santa Anita. But when he returns from a 7 1/2-month layoff in the third race Friday, he “might be short,” warned his trainer, Peter Miller.

“I had wanted to run him in a five-eighths race, but he didn’t get in,” Miller said Wednesday morning. “This was the second choice.”

The third race is at seven furlongs. Well Measured drew the rail.

Edge of Reality leads Motion trio into pair of graded stakes

Tom Keyser
Irad Ortiz Jr. guides Edge of Reality to a three-quarter-length victory in the Alphabet Soup for Pennsylvania-breds.

MIAMI – Trainer Graham Motion had plenty of options to choose from when it came to the only two graded stakes at this year’s inaugural Gulfstream Park West meet, Saturday’s Grade 3 Tropical Turf and My Charmer handicaps. Motion nominated four horses to both events.

In the end, he opted to enter Edge of Reality and Rapscallion in the Tropical Turf and only Magic of Reality for the My Charmer.
