Churchill notes: Fiftyshadesofgold must overcome yet another inside draw in Dogwood

Barbara D. Livingston
Fiftyshadesofgold and jockey Robby Albarado were assigned post 2 in a field of 10 3-year-old fillies for the seven-furlong Dogwood Stakes at Churchill Downs on Saturday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Theoretically, an inside post is the quickest way to victory.

But in one-turn races, most horsemen prefer an outside post, given a choice. There’s less chance for encumbrances that might be found when trapped in traffic close to the rail, and outside horses often don’t have to stand as long in the starting gate.

Declan's Fast Cat eyes another derby

Declan’s Fast Cat, who was second to Vicar’s in Trouble in the Grade 2, $400,000 Super Derby, could be headed next to either the Oklahoma Derby or the Indiana Derby, said his trainer, Steve Flint. Declan’s Fast Cat closed from last in the Super Derby and earned a career-high Beyer Speed Figure of 87.

“I was very pleased with his performance,” said Flint, private trainer for the horse’s owner, the Whispering Oaks Farm operation of Carroll Castille. “I was hoping for a quicker pace, but we didn’t get it. But he gave a good account of himself.”

Nates Mineshaft figures to have plenty of company up front in the Illinois Owners Stakes.
