Global View regroups for Secretariat Stakes

Barbara D. Livingston
Global View wins the American Turf in May, one of three wins in five starts on grass.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – Global View exited his disappointing seventh-place finish July 5 in the Belmont Derby in good physical condition, has returned to trainer Tom Proctor’s string at Arlington, and is being pointed for the Secretariat Stakes on Aug. 16, according to Craig Bernick, president of owner Glen Hill Farm.

A 7-1 chance in the $1.25 million Belmont Derby, Global View raced from the back of the pack, and as he was attempting to rally wide in the homestretch, a horse came out and briefly blocked his path.

Valdez continues to defy the odds

Erin Palmer/Emerald Downs
Felipe Valdez underwent spinal surgery after a spill in 2010, and it appeared his riding career was over. But he has returned to the saddle, and has an upset chance aboard Charlie Thomas on Sunday in the Seattle Slew Handicap.

AUBURN, Wash. – It’s been almost four years since Felipe Valdez won a stakes race. The interminable space in between has been occupied by a life-altering racing accident, surgery and then more surgery, years of rehabilitation, and finally tentative first steps toward reclaiming his career.

Against this unfortunate backdrop, a lot of people will be rooting for Valdez on Sunday when he rides Charlie Thomas in the Seattle Slew Handicap at Emerald Downs.

Battle of stablemates looms in Seattle Slew

Erin Palmer/Emerald Downs
Del Rio Harbor's connections likely will point the 3-year-old to the Seattle Slew Handicap after a solid run in the Coca-Cola Handicap.

AUBURN, Wash. – There has been little drama this year in the stakes ranks at Emerald Downs. Why Not Be Perfect pulled a $59.80 surprise in the Governor’s Handicap for older horses, but since that late-May shocker, Emerald’s stakes have been dominated by favorites. It could be more of the same Sunday, with Del Rio Harbor likely to be a short price in the $50,000 Seattle Slew Handicap for 3-year-olds.
