Fiftyshadesofgold will attempt to be the first Texas-bred to win a Grade 1 race in more than a decade on Saturday, when she runs in the $750,000 Acorn at Belmont Park. She will be one of the top choices in the one-mile race for 3-year-old fillies on the strength of her win in the Grade 3 Eight Belles at Churchill Downs.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Move over, California Chrome. There is another Lucky Pulpit colt in trainer Art Sherman’s stable attracting attention.

Kristi’s Copilot, a 2-year-old California-bred owned by breeder David LaCroix, is being pointed for the $125,000 Santa Anita Juvenile at 5 1/2 furlongs on June 22 after winning his debut on May 16.

Kristi’s Copilot won a maiden race at 4 1/2 furlongs in 51.84 seconds under Aaron Gryder, leaving Sherman impressed with the effort.

Tempest looks tough in allowance feature

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – It is hard to go past Tempest in a first-level allowance race for 3-year-olds that will serve as Sunday’s feature at Hastings. After all, Tempest is coming off a second-place finish in the $50,000 Jim Coleman Province on May 3 and he will appreciate the easier company with the drop into a conditional race. The 6 1/2-furlong sprint attracted six horses and goes as race 6 at 4:20 p.m. Pacific.

Trainer Dino Condilenios nominated Tempest to next Saturday’s $50,000 River Rock Casino, but opted for the easier spot.

Pick six carryover of $141,367 for Friday

ELMONT, N.Y. – There will be a pick six carryover of $141,367 at Belmont Park on Friday after the wager went unhit for a second straight card Thursday.

Despite longshot winners Finders Key ($28.60), Sam Sparkle ($23.20), and Ode to Sami ($58) as part of the sequence, there were live tickets to three of the eight runners entering the nightcap.

ELMONT, N.Y. – The connections of California Chrome who are based in New York have emanated more and more confidence in their colt’s Triple Crown quest with each passing morning that they watch their Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner train.

That confidence has traveled cross-country to California, where California Chrome’s 77-year-old trainer, Art Sherman, has been based for the last 10 days. While overseeing his string at Los Alamitos, Sherman has kept close tabs on what’s been going on at Belmont Park.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – The $50,000 Ross McLeod Stakes for 3-year-old fillies on May 3 was the most exciting race at the meet, with Ole’s Miss edging Arabella’s Muse at the finish following a thrilling stretch duel. After battling through extreme fractions, Arabella’s Muse gamely fought back when Ole’s Miss collared her mid-stretch but came up a neck short. They are expected to renew acquaintances June 7 in the $50,000 Emerald Downs Handicap at Hastings.

Interestingly, both horses will be saddled by different trainers in the Emerald Downs.

Big Bazinga may return for Victoria Park Stakes

Big Bazinga's connections have opted to run the horse in the American Turf Stakes on the Kentucky Derby undercard Saturday at Churchill Downs.

Big Bazinga, one of the leading 3-year-olds on the grounds at Woodbine, could return from a break here June 22 in the $125,000 Victoria Park Stakes, according to trainer Katerina Vassilieva.

Big Bazinga was on the Kentucky Derby trail over the winter in Florida before finishing fifth in the Grade 3 Spiral Stakes at Turfway and fourth in the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland. After it became evident that he wouldn’t make it into the body of the Derby field, he was entered in and scratched from the Grade 2 American Turf on the same Churchill card.

Really Sharp will start in Eclipse

Really Sharp wins the Grade 3 Vigil Stakes on Sunday at Woodbine.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Trainer Ian Black nominated the versatile 4-year-old Really Sharp to the Connaught Cup but has opted to run him Sunday at Woodbine in the Grade 2 Eclipse Stakes, a 1 1/16-mile Polytrack route.

Really Sharp competed at Gulfstream before notching his second start at this meet, going seven furlongs May 11 in the Grade 3 Vigil Stakes. The best of his two 1 1/16-mile races took place in the fall of 2012 at Keeneland, where he was demoted to sixth via disqualification after getting beaten a nose in the Grade 3 Bourbon on grass.

Something Extra goes for record third Connaught Cup victory

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – No horse has won the Grade 2 Connaught Cup three times, but Something Extra will try to capture the seven-furlong turf sprint for the third straight year Saturday at Woodbine. The $200,000 stakes lured eight others, including Excaper and River Seven.
