Tonalist gives Clement another shot at Belmont Stakes

Chelsea Durand
Tonalist, under Joel Rosario, cruises to a four-length victory in the Peter Pan.

Eleven years after running Dynever in the Belmont Stakes against Empire Maker and Funny Cide, trainer Christophe Clement gets another crack at the third leg of the Triple Crown with Tonalist, convincing winner of Saturday’s Grade 2 Peter Pan Stakes.

Dynever entered the Belmont off a win in the Lone Star Derby and was training well, Clement said, leading into the Belmont. However, Dynever did not handle the sloppy track and finished fourth behind Empire Maker.

Special shoes keep California Chrome's feet comfy

Barbara D. Livingston
California Chrome was having trouble with his heels until a blacksmith suggested using glue-on shoes affixed with nails.

CYPRESS, Calif. -- With white hooves on all four feet, Kentucky Derby winner California Chrome always has needed a little extra attention to hoof care, and his trainer, Art Sherman, said blacksmith Judd Fisher came up with a unique solution. California Chrome races in glue-on shoes, but the shoes are not glued on, they are affixed with nails.

The shoe, not the glue, is the reason, Sherman said. The shoes that California Chrome wears “help so he doesn’t go back on his heels,” Sherman said.

“It’s nothing obvious,” Baltas said. “He’s off in his right front. The shoe was tweaked in the work.”

Baltas said early Saturday afternoon that no injury had surfaced.
