Hoppertunity wins a one-mile maiden race at Santa Anita on Thursday.

ARCADIA, Calif. - After finishing fifth sprinting in his debut, Hoppertunity successfully stretched out and defeated maidens in his second start Thursday when going a mile, becoming the latest in a long line of promising 3-year-olds based here with trainer Bob Baffert.

“He looks like a big, two-turn horse,” Baffert said after the race. “He was just kicking it in gear at the end there.”

Baffert said Hoppertunity “sat back and came running” when going seven furlongs in his debut. Baffert won the race with Bayern, who also was making his debut.

Shared Belief earned a 106 Beyer Speed Figure for his win in the CashCall Futurity.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Shared Belief, the champion 2-year-old male of 2013, continues to recover from a grabbed quarter suffered in early January, but is not being pointed to a specific race, trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said Friday.

Hollendorfer said he does not have a timetable for Shared Belief’s next workout. Shared Belief has been walking at the barn.

“We’re taking our time until that is as solid and healed as it can be,” Hollendorfer said of Shared Belief’s troubled foot.

NEW ORLEANS – With three victories last weekend, trainer Keith Desormeaux continued to make his presence known at this Fair Grounds meet.

On Jan. 25, Desormeaux saddled two winners, including the 3-year-old Flatter colt Flat Gone. His 2 1/2-length win against maidens at a mile and 70 yards has Desormeaux aiming him at the Risen Star on Feb. 22.

Last Sunday, Desormeaux scored with a $55.80 winner when the 3-year-old filly T Lo ran away with a mile and 70-yard race for $12,500 maiden claimers by 6 1/4 lengths.

Not sure if she is good enough for this allowance, but ASCRIPTION (#5, 10-1) was a mile best last time vs. claimers.

PURE LUXURY (#1, 8-1) cuts back to a sprint and goes for a tag for the first time; expecting him to be involved early from the rail given a clean break, something he didn't get last time.-Kenny Peck

Not a great sign that she posted a career-low Beyer speed figure 1st time ever on dirt; brief speed in latest so cutting back a quarter mile can only help the cause; the runner-up finisher from last graduated next out in an SA-20K-maiden claimer with a 67 Beyer; Frannie'sspirittoo beat her 2-back on synthetic vs.

Back sprinting; that's probably a good thing; that 1/19 drill screams off the canvas; he has enough speed to maintain contact from the get go but still needs a rebound run.
