Gulfstream Park: Bahamian Squall defends Sunshine State title

Coady Photography
Bahamian Squall earned a guaranteed berth in the Breeders' Cup Sprint by winning the Smile under Luis Saez.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Bahamian Squall served notice he would be a sprinter to reckon with in 2013 when he closed out his 3-year-old campaign last December with a one-sided victory against statebreds in the Sunshine State Stakes. And sure enough, he made good on that promise.

Woodbine: Ultimate Destiny far exceeds Fehr's expectations

Michael Burns
Ultimate Destiny wins his third stakes of the season in Wednesday's Sirt Barton.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Ultimate Destiny completed a dream season for owner/trainer Alec Fehr by winning Wednesday night’s $125,000 Sir Barton Stakes at Woodbine with determination under Eurico Da Silva.

Ultimate Destiny, the 126-pound highweight in the field of Ontario-sired runners, conceded significant weight to his rivals, including favored Pender Harbour, who wound up third. It was Urban Forester who gave Ultimate Destiny all that he could handle in the 1 1/16-mile event, but he caught that 15-1 shot on the wire after kicking in strongly in the last furlong.

It won’t be easy to fill the holes left by Joyful Victory and Believe You Can.

Gulfstream: Closer Looks for December 7, 2013

Race 1

Rose of Harlan
This filly is out of a dam who won three of seven turf starts for 67k, but she didn't make much of an impression in her one turf start prior to this, and her overall form isn't up to the level of the top contenders in here.

Latique
Her one turf start was her best performance

Got a confidence builder in Phoenix, where the Perfect Soul gelding defeated optional maiden claimers at one mile on turf. Second place finisher, Mancala, returned to win. Back in the barn of Matt Chew, who has won five of his last 20 ( 25 per cent) moving from turf to synthetic.

E Z Passer
Draws the fence while stepping back up in her return from the freshening; mare's most recent score came sprinting and none of her other numbers of late look to fit so well in this spot; with a low percentage outfit at the helm we'll look elsewhere for the winner.

Those horses with forward trips should hold the advantage in this seemingly paceless opener; SALLY'S DREAM (#6, 5-1) came from just off the pace in her last couple but she'd benefit from a more aggressive ride from jockey Rajiv Maragh this time around. -Kenny Peck
