Breeders' Cup Turf: Little Mike breezes speedy five furlongs

Barbara D. Livingston

ARCADIA, Calif. – Quick five-furlong workouts are rare for Little Mike, the 2012 winner of the Breeders’ Cup Turf. The 6-year-old gelding often works that distance in times of between 1:01 and 1:03 when exercising at Churchill Downs or Gulfstream Park, where he has been based with trainer Dale Romans the past few years.

On Saturday at Santa Anita, in his final workout before the $3 million BC Turf this coming Saturday, Little Mike was timed in 59.80 seconds for five furlongs on the main track.

Pants On Fire, here winning the Monmouth Cup, returns to Churchill for the first time since finishing ninth in the 2011 Kentucky Derby.

Pants On Fire, one of the many viable contenders in a wide-open renewal of the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, had his final prerace work when going a half-mile Friday in 48 seconds at his Monmouth Park base.

“I caught him going out five-eighths in a minute flat,” trainer Kelly Breen said. “He did everything the right way. I’m very happy with him.”

Pants On Fire has really come to hand in his last two starts, winning the Grade 2 Monmouth Cup and the Grade 3 Ack Ack at Churchill Downs. The 5-year-old horse is booked on a Sunday charter to California.

Breeders' Cup notes: Grandeur might skip Turf

Grandeur, pre-entered for the $3 million Breeders’ Cup Turf on Nov. 2, did not have an ideal journey from England this week, casting doubt on his participation in America’s richest turf race.

In a brief phone conversation Friday, trainer Jeremy Noseda did not go into detail about Grandeur’s condition. Grandeur arrived from England late Wednesday and remained in quarantine Friday morning.

“At this moment, we have a few issues,” Noseda said. “Time will tell where we are. I’m dealing with the Breeders’ Cup.”

Breeders' Cup notes: Tiz Flirtatious, Old Time Hockey breeze

Benoit & Associates
Tiz Flirtatious (No. 3), under jockey Julien Leparoux, gets her first Grade 1 win in Saturday's Rodeo Drive Stakes.

Tiz Flirtatious needed a good work Friday at Betfair Hollywood Park to prepare for the biggest race of her career in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf. But trainer Marty Jones was walking a fine line and did not want her to do too much.

“This is the quickest turnaround she’s had since early this year,” Jones said, referring to the 35 days since she defeated Marketing Mix by a head in the Grade 1 Rodeo Drive on Sept. 28 at Santa Anita. “Hopefully, she won’t do too much; hopefully, not too little.”
