Santa Anita: Hollywood Turf Express likely target for A Toast to You

A Toast to You ends a 10-race losing streak by taking the California Flag Handicap under Mario Gutierrez.

A Toast to You has seen the last of claiming races for the foreseeable future, following his upset win in the California Flag Handicap on the hillside turf course last Saturday.

Trainer Peter Miller said after the race that he and owners Gary and Cecil Barber had debated whether to run A Toast to You in a $25,000 claimer or the California Flag. They opted for the stakes, which gave A Toast to You his first stakes win in an 18-1 upset.

Breeders' Cup workouts: Game On Dude, Beholder impress in drills

ARCADIA, Calif. – Game On Dude and Beholder, two of the leading California-based hopes for the Breeders’ Cup, both turned in strong works for their respective races on Tuesday morning at Santa Anita.

Game On Dude, expected to be the favorite in the Classic on Nov. 2, was given an official time of 1:11.40 for six furlongs after working in company for trainer Bob Baffert.

Beholder, part of an expected small but stellar cast for the Distaff on Nov. 1, was timed in 1:24.40 for seven furlongs in a team drill that left her trainer, Richard Mandella, almost giddy.

Remington: Alsvid may ship to Penn National for Fabulous Strike

Premiere Cup winner Alsvid may travel to Penn National for the $250,000 Fabulous Strike on Nov. 27.

Alsvid, who was second to the Breeders’ Cup-bound Wine Police in last month’s Remington Park Sprint Cup, is being considered for the $250,000 Fabulous Strike at Penn National, said his trainer, Chris Hartman. The six-furlong race is Nov. 27.

Alsvid is a multiple stakes winner of more than $500,000. He was the 3-5 favorite in the Remington Sprint on the strength of recent scores in the $100,000 Premiere Cup at Zia Park and an optional $35,000 claimer at Prairie Meadows for which he earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 109.

Northern California notes: Lucarelli starts Golden Gate meet with a bang

Frank Lucarelli couldn’t have asked for a better start to the Golden Gate Fields meet. On Saturday, he won the Miss America on the turf with Stormy Lucy. On Sunday, he sent out Gallant Son for the first time since a third-place finish in the Grade 3 San Francisco Mile on April 27 and saw him win a six-furlong prep for the Nov. 16 Oakland Stakes.

Gallant Son, whose victory in the six-furlong Albany last February was his first main-track stakes win since the 2010 Grade 3 Inglewood, edged favored Moonshine Bay and Administer in a three-way photo Sunday.

Santa Anita: Paynter works for Breeders' Cup Classic

Paynter worked in heavy fog Monday ahead of the Breeders' Cup Classic.

Paynter, preparing for the Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov. 2 at Santa Anita, worked in company Monday, but heavy fog obscured all but the final half-furlong of the drill, so track clockers said they were unable to give him an official time.

Paynter is scheduled to have one more work prior to the Classic.

Bob Baffert, who trains Paynter, confirmed that Paynter and Game On Dude were pre-entered Monday in the $5 million Classic, the richest of the 14 Breeders’ Cup races. Pre-entries for the Breeders’ Cup were due Monday and will be announced Wednesday.

Belmont Park: Hymn Book, Point of Entry in Breeders' Cup works

ELMONT, N.Y. - The lone New York-based Breeders’ Cup horse to work Monday at Belmont Park was Hymn Book, who went four furlongs in 50.62 seconds in company with the 2-year-old maiden Mischieviously. After crawling a first eighth in 13.86, Hymn Book got the final three furlongs of his move in 36.76 while galloping out five furlongs in 1:03.36.

“I think he’s doing really well,” trainer Shug McGaughey said of Hymn Book, winner of the Grade 1 Donn Handicap in 2012. “I’m seeing him do things around the barn I’ve never seen him do before, being a little more aggressive.”

Woodbine notes: Attfield loads up for Grade 1 turf stakes

No Explaining will start in Sunday's Grade 2 Canadian Stakes at Woodbine.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Trainer Roger Attfield plans to have a pair of entrants for each of the Grade 1 turf stakes here Sunday after No Explaining was scratched from last Saturday’s River Memories Stakes and redirected to the E.P. Taylor Stakes.

Attfield has Forte Dei Marmi and Perfect Timber for Sunday’s $1 million Canadian International, a 1 1/2-mile race for 3-year-olds and up, and already had Moment of Majesty for the $500,000 E.P. Taylor for fillies and mares at 1 1/4 miles.

Belmont Park: Last Gunfighter pre-entered for Breeders' Cup Classic

ELMONT, N.Y. – Last Gunfighter, winner of a trio of Grade 3 races this year including the Pimlico Special, was pre-entered Monday for the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic and will be ridden in the race by Javier Castellano, trainer Chad Brown said.

Last Gunfighter was one of 11 horses Brown pre-entered Monday for seven of the 14 Breeders’ Cup races, to be run Nov. 1-2 at Santa Anita.
