Fairmount jockey suspended 60 days for lack of effort

The stewards’ investigation into the July 23 race at Fairmount Park in which 70-year-old jockey R.A. “Cowboy” Jones rode the runner-up found no conspiracy among jockeys or trainers, although jockey John Lejeune has been suspended 60 days for an apparent lack of effort when finishing third in the subject race.

Saratoga: Fort Larned in post 3, made 7-5 for Whitney defense

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Defending Whitney Handicap winner Fort Larned drew post 3 and was installed as the 7-5 morning-line favorite for Saturday's 86th renewal of the Whitney Invitational Handicap at Saratoga.

Fort Larned will seek to become the first horse since Discovery to win back-to-back Whitneys. Discovery won three straight from 1934-36. Kelso (1961-63-65) and Commentator (2005, '08) were also multiple winners.

Oaklawn Park: Stakes schedule in 2014 worth a track-record $6.1 million

Oaklawn Park has increased the minimum purse for its open-company stakes races to $100,000 and created a “Racing Festival of the South Preview Day” that packs the Rebel, Azeri, and Razorback into a single program. Those changes represent the most significant enhancements to a record $6.1 million stakes schedule released Wednesday. The Hot Springs, Ark., track opens for a 57-date meet Jan. 10.

Del Mar: Gaines suspension to begin Thursday

DEL MAR, Calif. – Trainer Carla Gaines is set to begin a 30-day suspension on Thursday, the result of having two of her female horses test positive for an excessive amount of testosterone in July 2012.

Gaines on Tuesday ran out of legal maneuvers to stop or delay the suspension. Her request for a temporary restraining order in Los Angeles County Superior Court was denied by Judge Luis Lavin. She was represented by trainer Darrell Vienna, who is also an attorney.

Prince of Wales: Uncaptured rallies to win for Casse

Uncaptured, ridden by Miguel Mena, rallied for a one-length victory over River Seven in the Prince of Wales Stakes, the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown, at Fort Erie on Tuesday night.

Uncaptured, biding his time in fifth place under a patient Miguel Mena, rallied five wide into the stretch and ran down River Seven for a one-length victory in Tuesday’s $500,000 Prince of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie.

Sent off as the 2-5 choice in the field of six for the 1 3/16-mile Prince of Wales, Uncaptured gave his backers some anxious moments down the backstretch.

The super pick five jackpot at Louisiana Downs has not been claimed since June 27, making for a $626,830 carryover heading into Thursday’s card. The bet runs on the last five races on the program, and the jackpot pays out only if there is one ticket with the winners of all of the races in the sequence. For the card Thursday, the super pick five will start with the fourth of eight races.

Lone Star Park: Lasting Bubbles may head to Ellis Park for Grade 3 Gardenia

Lasting Bubbles is in the best form of her career, and as a result she could get a shot at graded company next week in the $100,000 Gardenia at Ellis Park.

Trainer Kevin Peek said Lasting Bubbles, based on a farm near Texarkana, Texas, is scheduled to work later this week at either Louisiana Downs or Lone Star Park. It would be her prep for a possible start in the Gardenia, a Grade 3, one-mile race for fillies and mares on Aug. 10.

Nates Mineshaft, one of the surprise stories of the 2012 racing season, won his first start in more than a year when he captured a high-end allowance race Saturday at Arlington Park, and the victory – Nates Mineshaft’s first on turf – is likely to lead to a start in the Arlington Million on Aug. 17.

West Virginia Derby: Departing, Overanalyze head nine-horse field at Mountaineer

Departing, working out Monday at Saratoga, will make his first start since the Preakness in Saturday's West Virginia Derby.

Departing was assigned post 5 and Overanalyze got the outside post as the top contenders in a field of nine 3-year-olds in the Grade 2, $750,000 West Virginia Derby, the annual showcase event at Mountaineer Racetrack.

The 1 1/8-mile West Virginia Derby, to be run Saturday, also got Say Ow (post 3), in off back-to-back wins at Betfair Hollywood Park, and an improving Steve Asmussen colt, Betweenhereandcool (post 4).
