Emerald Downs: Metz looks to keep rolling in Saturday feature

AUBURN, Wash. – Trainer Jeff Metz, who is enjoying a productive first season at Emerald Downs, could add to his haul Saturday when he sends out two starters, including likely favorite Max Cooper, in the featured ninth race, a $10,000 claimer for older horses at 1 1/16 miles. First post for the 10-race card is 2 p.m. Pacific.

Metz, who arrived from Turf Paradise in March, had saddled 23 winners through the first 38 days of the meeting, and his two starters in Saturday’s feature, Max Cooper and M Two Forty, have combined for five of those victories.

Hollywood Park: Teddy's Promise just needs a clean trip in A Gleam Handicap

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – A younger Teddy’s Promise would have surrendered during a brutal trip in a minor stakes last month at Betfair Hollywood Park.

Never mind that she was the odds-on favorite. Teddy’s Promise does not typically overcome trouble, and there was plenty of it. Trapped and blocked along the rail, Teddy’s Promise steadied at the three-eighths pole and steadied sharply at the head of the lane.

“Last year, if that would have happened, she would have packed it in,” trainer Ron Ellis said.

Arlington: Rahystrada has shot at making history in Arlington Handicap

Four-Footed Fotos
Rahystrada, winning the 2012 Arlington Handicap, will try to become the first horse to win the Grade 3 event three times..

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – The Arlington Handicap dates to 1929. The legendary Round Table won it twice, in 1958 and 1959, and Cosmonaut came home first in 2006 and 2007. But Rahystrada on Saturday can become the first horse to win the Arlington Handicap three times, a feat that would be especially noteworthy coming from a 9-year-old former claimer.

Rahystrada won the 2010 Arlington Handicap, didn’t start in the 2011 edition, and won again last year, going on to finish third in the Arlington Million.

Arlington Park: Strathnaver would benefit from firm turf in Modesty Handicap

Keeneland/Coady Photography
Strathnaver is 2 for 3 in the United States, including a score in the Grade 3 Bewitch at Keeneland in April.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – There’s a tendency to think that European imports have a natural inclination to perform optimally on soft turf. That thought might hold true in a general sense, but it does not apply to the 4-year-old filly Strathnaver.

Hollywood Park: Juvenile Championship has unproven starters

Shigeki Kikkawa
Willie B Awesome was second in the Willard Proctor Memorial Stakes.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – The custom of winning a maiden race with a 2-year-old and then advancing to a stakes is being challenged this weekend at Betfair Hollywood Park.

In Saturday’s $150,000 Hollywood Juvenile Championship, four of the seven runners in the Grade 3 race at six furlongs are maidens, and three are first-time starters – Bond Holder, Carson’s Ten, and Knock Em Flat.

They must beat two runners with stakes experience – Willie B Awesome and Solid Wager, who were second and third, respectively, in the Willard Proctor Memorial Stakes on June 15.

Hollywood Park: She’s a Tiger heads Landaluce Stakes

Shigeki Kikkawa
On the Backstreets ran second as the even-money favorite in the Cinderella Stakes.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – She’s a Tiger won her debut by nine lengths at the Alameda County Fair at Pleasanton on June 22. It was not a surprise. She’s a Tiger overwhelmed three rivals at odds of 1-5.

“You don’t get too many like her,” trainer Jeff Bonde said.

A half-sister to the Grade 1 winner Smiling Tiger, She’s a Tiger makes her stakes debut in the $100,000 Landaluce Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at Betfair Hollywood Park on Saturday. She may not be 1-5 in the Landaluce, but she will be favored to win the six-furlong race.

Delaware Park: Laughing or Tannery choice for Goldberg in Dick Memorial

Bill Denver/Equi-Photo
Laughing won the Grade 3 Eatontown at Monmouth in her only start this year. She will represent trainer Alan Goldberg in the Robert G. Dick Memorial if the turf is firm.

The weather forecast will guide trainer Alan Goldberg’s strategy for the Grade 3, $200,000 Robert G. Dick Memorial on Saturday at Delaware Park.

The Dick, the supporting event on a card topped by the Grade 2 Delaware Oaks, attracted 10 fillies and mares for the three-turn contest at 1 3/8 miles on the turf.

Goldberg has two standout Irish-bred entrants in Laughing and Tannery. Only one will run, depending on course conditions.

Colonial Downs: Rydilluc tries to stay perfect on grass in Virginia Derby

Barbara D. Livingston
Rydilluc won the inaugural Penn Mile in his most recent start to improve to 4 for 4 on turf.

On June 1 at Penn National, the unofficial title of the country’s top 3-year-old turf miler was decided when Rydilluc defeated Charming Kitten and Jack Milton in the $500,000 Penn Mile, the richest race for sophomore turf horses run to that point in 2013.

A month and a half later, Saturday’s Grade 2, $500,000 Virginia Derby is set to determine the 3-year-old pecking order going the longer turf distance of 1 1/4 miles.
