Woodbine: Something Extra cuts back for Highlander run

Michael Burns
Something Extra won the Grade 2 Connaught Cup for the second year in a row May 26.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Something Extra, who wired a quality field in the Connaught Cup Stakes, will cut back from seven to six furlongs in Sunday’s Grade 2, $200,000 Highlander Stakes, a top-notch supporting feature on Queen’s Plate Day at Woodbine.

Something Extra fractured a splint bone in winning last year’s Connaught Cup. He was off until the fall, when he won the Mt. Sassafras and ran third here in the Grade 3 Kennedy Road, both Polytrack races.

Monmouth Park: Micromanage on way up entering the Long Branch Stakes

Barbara D. Livingston
Micromanage looks to be an improving horse coming into Sunday's Long Branch Stakes.

OCEANPORT, N.J. – Todd Pletcher had high hopes for Micromanage, especially after the colt easily won his debut at the tail end of last year’s Saratoga season.

When those expectations didn’t pan out after the initial victory, the $170,000 yearling purchase by the Repole Stable was given an extended vacation.

Micromanage can rekindle that early optimism Sunday at Monmouth Park in the $100,000 Long Branch Stakes at 1 1/16 miles for 3-year-olds.

Woodbine: Ontario Damsel tops stakes tripleheader next weekend

Michael Burns
Dance Again is likely to run Saturday in the $150,000 Ontario Damsel.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Three stakes will be run here next weekend, with the $150,000 Ontario Damsel and $125,000 Passing Mood set for Saturday and the $125,000 Shady Well going Sunday.

Dance Again, fifth in the June 9 Woodbine Oaks for trainer Malcolm Pierce, heads the prospective field for the Ontario Damsel, a one-mile turf race for Ontario-bred 3-year-old fillies.

The Ontario Damsel was run over 6 1/2 furlongs of turf until 2010, when it was switched to its current distance to serve as a prep for the Wonder Where Stakes.

Woodbine: Solid Appeal, Irish Mission head tough Dance Smartly

Michael Burns
Solid Appeal became a stakes winner in the Grade 2 Nassau at a mile on turf.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Solid Appeal and Irish Mission, the 1-2 finishers in the May 25 Nassau Stakes, will renew their rivalry Sunday in the Grade 2, $200,000 Dance Smartly.

But Moment of Majesty, Hard Not to Like, and Distorted Legacy all are shipping to their former hunting grounds for the Dance Smartly, along with invader Julie’s Love, and contention runs deep in the 1 1/8-mile turf race for fillies and mares that attracted a field of 11.

Hastings: Supernaturel winner Miss Derek remains a work in progress

Woodbine: Attfield goes for five in a row in Singspiel

Barbara D. Livingston
Forte Dei Marmi will try to give trainer Roger Attfield his fifth straight win in the Grade 3, $150,000 Singspiel Stakes.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Maybe someday the $150,000 Singspiel Stakes will be renamed after trainer Roger Attfield, who has won the Grade 3 turf marathon five times, including in each of the past four years. In 2012, he ran one-two after a stirring stretch battle between the 10-year-old Musketier and Simmard.

On the Queen’s Plate undercard Sunday, Attfield will saddle Forte Dei Marmi in the 12-furlong Singspiel. The inconsistent European import ran the race of his life in his last Woodbine appearance in October, when he was a prominent third in the Grade 1 Canadian International.

Hastings: One Condilenios stablemate tries to catch another

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Trainer Dino Condilenios has both ends covered in a $25,000 claiming race for 3-year-olds and up that drew eight horses and will serve as Sunday’s feature at Hastings.

Golden Triumph will be the one they have to catch in the 6 1/2-furlong sprint, and Crew Leader looks like the one with the best chance of running down his speedy stablemate.

Queen's Plate: Up With the Birds one to beat in field of 12

Michael Burns
Up With the Birds will be favored in Sunday's $1 million Queen's Plate at Woodbine.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Up With the Birds has used his good turn of foot to win four of six starts against some quality opposition, and that kick could propel him to victory in Sunday’s 154th running of the $1 million Queen’s Plate at Woodbine.

A powerful little colt, Up With the Birds is one of two Sam-Son Farm entrants trained by Malcolm Pierce, along with his workmate, His Race to Win. Both are by speed sire Stormy Atlantic and from a stamina-oriented Sam-Son family.

Fort Erie: Villeneuve enters next stage as trainer

Michael Burns
Francine Villeneuve holds her 2004 Avelino Gomez Award.

F ORT ERIE, Ontario – Standing outside one of her stalls on the Fort Erie backstretch, Francine Villeneuve, in blue jeans and T-shirt, looks as trim and as fit as she did during her riding career.

Villeneuve, in her jockey role for more than two decades, had a career full of special occasions, including a ride in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff with Wilderness Song, who finished seventh behind her winning stablemate Dance Smartly in 1991. She also rode Wilderness Song to a second-place finish behind Dance Smartly in that year’s Queen’s Plate.
