Belmont: Blingo's long break may not matter in turf feature

ELMONT, N.Y. – Away from the races for 11 months, Blingo looks to jump-start his once-promising career in a $74,000 second-level turf allowance race that serves as the feature on Belmont Park’s fifth and final “Party at the Park” card on Friday. First post is 3 p.m. Eastern.

Given that trainer John Shirreffs’s two winners this meet came with a first-time starter and a horse who had been off more than six months, the 11-month layoff should not be disconcerting to those looking to wager on Blingo. Moreover, Blingo has worked 17 times since February.

Hastings: Notis Her steps up following sharp win

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – When Notis Her is good she can stay in the zone for a while, and she is certainly capable of handling the small jump in class into a $10,000 claiming race for fillies and mares after winning for $7,500 June 16. Friday’s 1 1/16-mile race drew seven horses and will serve as the feature at Hastings.

Woodbine: Man Stuff looks to snap losing streak in Friday allowance

Michael Burns
Man Stuff has lost seven consecutive races since winning the Sweet Briar Too Stakes last summer.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – There’s an obvious lone front-runner ridden by Jesse Campbell for trainer Nick Gonzalez in Friday’s feature, and it’s not Queen’s Plate winner Midnight Aria returning on short rest. Man Stuff will be looking to break out of a slump in the second-level optional claimer, and the crafty Campbell seems like the right man for the job.

Northlands: Catchtheconnection may be primed for sprint feature

Catchtheconnection couldn’t quite catch Call Me Lou when he made his first start of the year in a second-level allowance race June 21, but if he takes the expected move forward he could be tough to handle in a similar race that will serve as Friday’s feature at Northlands Park.

The six-furlong sprint for 3-year-olds and up drew six horses and goes as the second of eight races.

Paynter possible for San Diego at Del Mar next out

Benoit & Associates
Paynter, under Rafael Bejarano, wins by 4 1/2 lengths in his first race since taking the Haskell last summer.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Paynter, winner of the 2012 Haskell Invitational who made a successful return to racing last month after battling colitis and laminitis last summer and fall, may start in the $200,000 San Diego Handicap at Del Mar on July 27.

Arlington Park notes: Finnegans Wake will pass on Arlington Handicap

Barbara D. Livingston
Finnegans Wake is headed to the Man o' War at Belmont Park.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Donegal Racing announced Monday night on Twitter that Finnegans Wake, an anticipated starter in the Arlington Handicap on Saturday, was being redirected to the Man o' War at Belmont Park.

Donegal and trainer Dale Romans, however, still have a horse for the Arlington Handicap in Dullahan, who is set to make his first start since finishing 11th in the Dubai World Cup. The other horse Romans sent to Dubai this winter, Little Mike, made his first start since the long trip last weekend, fading to fourth after setting the pace in the United Nations Stakes.

Matz making rare Arlington visit, bringing Colonial Flag for Modesty

Michael Burns
Colonial Flag was a Grade 3 winner last year and placed in two other graded turf stakes.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Trainer Michael Matz hasn't had a runner at Arlington since 2004, and during his entire career has started only one horse at the suburban Chicago track, but Matz can only hope things work out as well this weekend with Colonial Flag as they did in his other two trips here.

In 2003, Matz took down the Grade 1 Secretariat Stakes with Kicken Kris, who one year later was promoted from second to first when Powerscourt was disqualified from the Arlington Million.

Fair Grounds stakes schedule has a familiar look

Fair Grounds Race Course on Tuesday released a 2013-2014 stakes schedule nearly identical to the one it employed during the 2012-2013 racing season. A total of 58 stakes worth $7.51 million will be offered during a meet running Nov. 22 to March 30.

Fair Grounds hosted 56 stakes during its most recent meet, but the two new races, both for Alabama-breds, are of little consequence. The track made minor changes to four Louisiana-bred stakes, including the renaming of a race for retired statebred standout Star Guitar, but the core of the 2012-2013 stakes schedule remains the same.
