Belmont Park: Freedom Child romps in Peter Pan slop; Belmont Stakes next

Tom Keyser
Freedom Child, with Luis Saez aboard, runs away from his rivals in the Peter Pan.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Freedom Child had no chance to make the Kentucky Derby when he lost all chance at the start of the Wood Memorial. Given the way he ran in Saturday’s Grade 2, $200,000 Peter Pan Stakes, Freedom Child could have a big chance in the Belmont Stakes on June 8. Especially if the track is wet.

Despite an awkward start, Freedom Child quickly shot to the front under Luis Saez and turned the Peter Pan into his own personal training session, romping to a 13 1/4-length victory over a sloppy Belmont Park main track.

Finger Lakes: Princess Phoebe, Sweet Hot Toddy face off in feature

Princess Phoebe and Sweet Hot Toddy, both coming off dominant victories in their first starts of the season that produced identical Beyer Speed Figures, and both from barns that have been hot in the early weeks of the 2013 Finger Lakes meet, clash in Monday’s $25,000 feature at the western New York track.

The five-furlong eighth race is a third-level allowance for New York-bred fillies and mares. The two logical favorites in a field of seven are extremely difficult to separate.

Parx: Mikey Likes It has strong Dutrow factor going for her

The opportunity that awaits bettors in Monday’s $53,000 feature at Parx Racing doesn’t come along very often. On average, it happens about four times a year, and has not occurred at all within the past six months.

When fans looking to cash a bet see a Tony Dutrow-trained filly like Mikey Likes It, they should be running to the windows.
