Damon’s Mound is all set for Saturday’s Saratoga Special, having come out of his final workout for the race in good order.

Saturday at trainer Michelle Lovell’s Colonial Downs base, Damon’s Mound worked five furlongs in 1:02, with race rider Gabriel Saez coming in to breeze the colt.

“Just a maintenance work,” said Michelle Lovell, who trains Damon’s Mound for Michele and Cliff Love. “Just an easy, in-hand work by himself.”

Asmussen sends out an on-his-toes Epicenter for Travers work

Barbara D. Livingston
Epicenter, who won the Jim Dandy at Saratoga, tries to get his first Grade 1 win in the Travers at Saratoga on Aug. 27.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Monday marked only nine days since Epicenter won the Grade 2 Jim Dandy, but the 3-year-old colt seems eager to get to his next engagement, the Grade 1, $1.25 million Travers Stakes on Aug. 27.

Sensing how sharp Epicenter has been the last week, trainer Steve Asmussen on Monday gave him a five-furlong workout that the 3-year-old did by himself in 1:01.70. He got his final quarter in 24.81 seconds and galloped out six furlongs in 1:15.41.

It was a bit atypical for an Asmussen runner to do that much so close to his last race.

Images from the drone provide an overhead view shown to the public during replays and are used by stewards to review inquiries.

Jockey Victor Esoinoza was fined $1,500 for using his whip more than six times during Express Train's head victory in the Santa Anita Handicap.

DEL MAR, Calif. – The days of chasing leading rider trophies are long gone for Hall of Fame rider Victor Espinoza. The mementoes that accompany big-race wins provide a suitable substitute.

Espinoza, 50, has won seven stakes this year, surpassing the six stakes wins he had in 2021. He has expectations for greater success before the end of the Del Mar meeting on Sept. 11, and beyond.

“I want to keep it going and win a few more,” Espinoza said on the backstretch on Sunday morning between workers.
