California Angel will try to rebound from her 11th-place finish in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf in the Untapable Stakes.f

Already a graded stakes winner on turf, California Angel will conclude her 2-year-old campaign with a dirt start Dec. 26 in the $100,000 Untapable Stakes at Fair Grounds.

George Leonard III, who trains California Angel for Chris Walsh, said Tuesday that the filly would return to the main track in the Untapable, a route race new this season to the Fair Grounds stakes schedule. California Angel has worked twice, on Nov. 27 and Dec. 6, since arriving in New Orleans, where Leonard is stabling 14 horses for the Fair Grounds meet.

Aloha West (left) runs down Dr. Schivel at 11-1 to score his first stakes win by a nose in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Del Mar.

Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner Aloha West’s campaign adds a new dimension to the term “career year.”

The 4-year-old colt’s entire career has been compressed into calendar year 2021.

Aloha West’s season began in February at Oaklawn Park with a debut maiden win and, it turns out, ended Nov. 6 at Del Mar with the narrowest of victories in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint.

McKeever gets a little pre-nuptial bliss from Bullseye Beauty

Coady Photography
Bullseye Beauty (No. 8), who gave Andrew McKeever his first stakes victory since 2013 earlier this year, wins the Holiday Inaugural last weekend at Turfway.

As great as last weekend was for Andrew McKeever, this one should be even better.

“I’m getting married,” McKeever said this week by phone from Louisiana, where he and Kathleen “Weenie” Aertker will be tying the knot Saturday.

No doubt there will be mention at the wedding celebration of Bullseye Beauty, whose victory in the $100,000 Holiday Inaugural over Tapeta last Saturday at Turfway Park kept the filly unbeaten in three starts over synthetic surfaces.

Kavod may go longer in Smarty Jones Stakes

Coady Photography
Kavod, winner of the Advent Stakes at Oaklawn Park, could make his next start in the Smarty Jones Stakes on Jan. 1.

Kavod could get a chance at the rich 3-year-old program at Oaklawn Park.

Trainer Chris Hartman said Tuesday that the recent stakes winner is under serious consideration for a start in the $250,000 Smarty Jones on Jan. 1.

“It’s the most logical spot,” he said. “The timing is good.”

Hartman said Kavod also has been nominated to the $75,000 Sugar Bowl at Fair Grounds. The six-furlong race for 2-year-olds is Dec. 27.

“I don’t know if I’ll travel with him or not,” he said.

Top Mr. Prospector nominees may go elsewhere

Barbara D. Livingston
Drain the Clock breezes Monday morning in preparation for the Grade 2 Amsterdam on Sunday.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Nominations came up light for the first graded stakes of the meet, Saturday’s Grade 3 Mr. Prospector, with only 13 horses on the list including four from the barn of trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. One of those, the Grade 1 winner Drain the Clock, is entered under allowance conditions in Friday’s main event. Quick Tempo, another of the Mr. Prospector nominees, is entered in the same race while Miles Ahead won last Saturday’s Claiming Crown Rapid Transit and also has been ruled out for the Mr. Prospector.

Sam David Jr.'s Sunday goes perfectly

You’d have to think trainer Sam David Jr.’s career apex came May 2, 1997, when he sent out Blushing K. D. to win the Kentucky Oaks. But Sunday at Fair Grounds turned out memorably, too.

David entered five horses on the eight-race Fair Grounds card. One of them was an also-eligible and was scratched. The other four came home winners.

“My brother told me I’d won three and had a second once, but I don’t think I’ve ever won four in a day,” David said.

Venti Valentine headed to Florida but will return for Busher

Jim Sewastynowicz
Venti Valentine came up a neck short of Nest in the Grade 2 Demoiselle after an eventful stretch run.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Venti Valentine, like many of the stakes performers from last Saturday’s Aqueduct card, will head to Florida in the coming days, but her connections are already plotting the New York-bred filly’s next race to be in New York.

Venti Valentine, second to Nest in the Grade 2 Demoiselle, will be pointed to the $250,000 Busher Stakes on March 5 at Aqueduct, trainer Jorge Abreu said. The Busher, a one-turn mile, does offer its winner 50 points toward the Kentucky Oaks on May 6 at Churchill Downs.
