The maiden special weight was for 2-year-olds at a mile. Prescott placed Well All See It just off the pace before the pair opened up on their rivals in the late stages.

Barbara D. Livingston
While other sports have been allowed to host some fans, racetracks in New York are awaiting government guidance.

There will be 46 stakes totaling $5.795 million in purses offered at the 2021-22 Aqueduct winter meet, the New York Racing Association announced Thursday.

The winter meet begins Dec. 9 and runs through March 27. Racing will be conducted four days a week through February and then three days a week in March, a schedule that has been in place the last several years. The only noteable change to the racing schedule is there is no live racing on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, but there will be a live card on Presidents Day (Feb. 21).

Barbara D. Livingston
Fausto Gutierrez recibe a Letruska luego de su victoria

There is hope, still, for anyone crazy enough to continue in the niche profession of turf writing: Fausto Gutierrez has blazed a path out.

Yes, Gutierrez was a racing handicapper and writer for the Mexican newspaper Reforma off-and-on for about 10 years, starting while he was still a college student and lasting until he, ahem, saw the light.

Tarnawa will try to repeat in the Turf off a solid second in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

DEL MAR, Calif. – The international quarantine area on the east side of the Del Mar backstretch has buzzed like a beehive since Sunday morning.

More than 50 overseas runners, a record, have traveled for the 2021 Breeders’ Cup, a massive contingent to accommodate.

For racing officials, the challenges are logistical – safely and efficiently providing a temporary training base for a horde of animals used to walking around wooded trails half the day.

Sweet Dani Girl earned an 86 Beyer for her Myrtlewood win last month.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – You can stop phoning Carlo Vaccarezza now – not about his Italian cuisine, but about buying his horse.

“The phone is ringing off the hook, but I’m not selling this filly,” owner-trainer Vaccarezza said early this week in regard to inquiries about Sweet Dani Girl, his homebred 2-year-old who stayed unbeaten in two starts by winning the Myrtlewood Stakes last Friday at Keeneland.

2021 Breeders' Cup: Rosario takes flight after riding records, first Eclipse Award

Barbara D. Livingston
Joel Rosario is the leading rider by purse money won this year and has a chance to break records for stakes wins and graded stakes wins in a season.

DEL MAR, Calif. – In order to get somewhere, you’ve got to go everywhere.

That’s sort of the mantra agent Ron Anderson and jockey Joel Rosario have lived by this fall as the former attempts to make the latter the leading rider in the country in the most important category – purse money won.

“If you want to lead the country on the second page of the Form,” said Anderson, referring to the page in Daily Racing Form that lists the statistical leaders, “you have to travel.

“Good horses, big purses, and if you got to go to different places you got to go.”

2021 Breeders' Cup: With six BC runners, Asmussen can add on to an already monstrous season

Barbara D. Livingston
Steve Asmussen in August became the winningest trainer in North American racing history.

DEL MAR, Calif. – He’s always on the go, to the track to watch his horses train, to the airport to head off and see another of his strings, the phone ever present to check in with his team of assistants. Often, there’s not much time for reflection for Steve Asmussen. There’s another track to get to, another race to win.

But this past year has afforded him many opportunities to savor where he’s come from – most notably, the people who made him who he is – and how much he’s accomplished.

Vella may run The Minkster in Grey Stakes before giving him the winter off

Julie Wright
The Minkster successfully stretched out from 6 1/2 furlongs on turf to 1 1/8 miles on Tapeta in the Coronation Futurity while making his second career start.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Trainer Danny Vella said unbeaten Coronation Futurity winner The Minkster could make one more start before getting the winter off with next year’s Queen’s Plate in mind.

The Minkster went from his authoritative first-out score in a maiden special weight sprint on the grass Oct. 30 to Saturday’s $252,400 Coronation Futurity, which he won by 2 1/4 lengths after tracking a slow pace.

Vella said the Grade 3 Grey here Nov. 28 could be next for The Minkster, who earned a 66 Beyer Speed Figure in the Coronation.
