Dream Shake going in Pat Day Mile

Benoit Photo
Dream Shake wins his debut Feb. 7 at Santa Anita. He went on to finish third in the Grade 2 San Felipe on March 6.

Dream Shake, third in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby on April 3, will start in the Grade 2 Pat Day Mile on May 1 at Churchill Downs and not the Kentucky Derby on the same day, trainer Peter Eurton said Friday.

The decision was made after conversations through the week between Eurton and the partnership that owns the colt – Exline-Border Racing, Philip Hausman, and SAF Racing. The Pat Day Mile distance compared to the Kentucky Derby distance of 1 1/4 miles was the difference.

Barbara D. Livingston
Hall of Famer Ron McAnally is the breeder, along with his wife, Debbie, of Kentucky Derby contender Rock Your World.

ARCADIA, Calif. – At 6 o’clock every morning here at Santa Anita, Ron McAnally arrives to watch his handful of horses train. He’s kept the same routine for decades, back when he was the nation’s champion trainer three times, before he got into the Hall of Fame. He craves the stability, the familiarity, and, most of all, the horses. They have given him everything. And he came from nothing.

Klein hopes to have Field Day provide a late birthday gift

Coady Photography
Field Day is part of an oversubscribed field for the William Walker.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Richard Klein didn’t exactly invent Brad Cox, but he sure was in on the ground floor of the making of an Eclipse Award-winning trainer.

Not long after Cox went out on his own in the fall of 2004, Klein and his late parents, Bert and Elaine, were the first owners with considerable means to employ Cox.

“I guess you could say we were onto him early,” recalled Klein. “We saw his work ethic and how his mind works, so we gave him a few of our cheaper horses to help get him started.”
