Preakness winner Swiss Skydiver is back in training with Ken McPeek at Gulfstream.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Swiss Skydiver, who surely will be named the champion 3-year-old filly of 2020 when Eclipse Awards are announced Thursday night, is nearing her first breeze of the year. Trainer Kenny McPeek said the 2020 Preakness winner “has been galloping at Gulfstream for two or three weeks now and is doing great.”

“We gave her 60 days’ rest and have no first race back in mind,” he said. “There are no intentions of going to Saudi Arabia or Dubai with her.”

Holy Bull a dirt audition for Tarantino

Tarantino wins at Gulfstream on Dec. 11. He is 2 for 3, with all of his starts having come on turf.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – There are no fewer than seven ownership entities listed for a 3-year-old named Tarantino, but it was one person with a singular notion that will lead to the colt making his dirt debut next Saturday in the Holy Bull Stakes.

“It was my idea,” said trainer Rudy Brisset. “There’s a lot of teamwork involved, obviously, when you have that many people involved, and you have to talk things through. But I get on the horse every day, and he’s bred for the dirt, so the group agreed to try this.”

Los Alamitos received regulatory approval from the California Horse Racing Board on Thursday for a 12-month racing license for the current evening meeting through Dec. 21, a reversal of the board’s decision last month to grant a six-month license.

The board voted 4-3 to approve the year-long license.

The Great One figures to skate in maiden race with repeat of stakes effort

Emily Shields
The Great One made his debut in the Speakeasy in September and comes off a nose loss in the Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity.

On Nov. 6, Hot Rod Charlie finished second at 94-1 in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Keeneland, losing by three-quarters of a length to Essential Quality. On Dec. 19, The Great One finished second at 33-1 by a nose to Spielberg in the Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity.

Both are trained by Doug O’Neill, who is hopeful the longshots of the late autumn can become well-backed winners on the next two Saturdays at Santa Anita.

Post draw cruel to outsiders in Pegasus World Cup

Debbie Roma
Knicks Go, the morning-line favorite, figures to use his speed breaking from post 4 in the Pegasus World Cup.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – There are always winners and losers at the post position draw for races run at 1 1/8 miles on the main track at Gulfstream Park because of the relatively short run to the first turn. And Saturday’s $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational was no exception.

Recently, Restrainedvengence has been fitted with glue-on shoes as opposed to conventional shoes applied with nails. Brinkerhoff said the 6-year-old gelding has been “a lot better to handle.”

“He’s a lot more relaxed,” Brinkerhoff said. “I think he’ll be a better horse this year.

Juan Hernandez was fined for his whip use during Sunday's Astra Stakes.

Juan Hernandez, the leading rider at the current Santa Anita winter-spring meeting, was fined $1,000 by track stewards on Monday for excessive use of the whip.

Hernandez was cited for using his whip more than six times on Lucky Peridot, who finished fourth in Sunday’s Grade 3 Astra Stakes. Hernandez was sanctioned for his third such offense in the last 60 days.

The California Horse Racing Board toughened whip rules in October, limiting the frequency of strikes allowed in a race and mandating that whips be used only in an under-handed fashion.
