Sharp Samurai among more than 170 workers on Saturday

Sharp Samurai, second in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic on Aug. 22, worked a quick half-mile in 47.40 seconds at Santa Anita on Saturday, moving closer to a start in an important turf stakes.

Sharp Samurai is under consideration for two races on Oct. 3 - the Grade 1 Shadwell Mile on turf at Keeneland or the Grade 2 City of Hope Mile on turf at Santa Anita, said co-owner Tim Cohen on Saturday. Cohen said in a text message that Sharp Samurai is unlikely to run in the Grade 1 Awesome Again Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on dirt at Santa Anita on Sept. 26. Sharp Samurai is trained by Mark Glatt.

Kentucky Derby winner Authentic pleases Baffert with five-furlong work for Preakness

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Authentic was sent through his first breeze on Saturday since winning the Kentucky Derby, going five furlongs in 59.20 seconds at a chilly Churchill Downs.

With his Hall of Fame trainer, Bob Baffert, watching frontside, Authentic was ridden by Martin Garcia when working over a fast track shortly after 9 a.m. Eastern. According to Churchill clocker John Nichols, the Into Mischief colt went in splits of 23.80 and 35.40 before proceeding in out times of 1:12.20 and 1:25.20.

Funny Guy possible for Kelso Handicap

Tiz the Law still in recovery mode

ELMONT, N.Y. – In a perfect world, Tiz the Law, the Kentucky Derby runner-up, would likely have breezed this weekend toward a potential start in the Preakness.

In the real world, Tiz the Law has been slow to bounce back from the Derby and is not expected to breeze until mid-week at the earliest, trainer Barclay Tagg said Friday.

Los Alamitos open for daytime simulcasting

Los Alamitos reopened for limited daytime simulcasting earlier this month.

The track has limited access to outdoor areas, notably the grandstand apron and outside of the mezzanine level on a daily basis, and the patio and terrace of the Vessels club from Thursdays through Sundays. Additional televisions and self-service machines have been added to the Vessels club to accommodate demand.

Collmus to serve as Del Mar announcer during fall meet

Larry Collmus will serve as the announcer at the Del Mar autumn meet this year.

Larry Collmus will call the races at the Del Mar autumn meeting, continuing as a replacement for Trevor Denman who is taking this year off because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The track made the announcement in a statement on Friday morning.

Waspirant stays on track for American Pharoah Stakes

Only trainers and their attending staff will be allowed at Santa Anita during the races beginning Friday. Horse owners will not.

It has taken a bit of commuting on Southern California freeways to prepare the promising colt Waspirant for his stakes debut in the Grade 1 American Pharoah Stakes on Sept. 26 at Santa Anita.

Trained by John Shirreffs, Waspirant won his second start in a maiden special weight race at a mile on Aug. 29 at Del Mar. Waspirant had a half-mile workout on Sept. 8 at Del Mar, the day after the track’s summer meeting concluded. He was shipped to Santa Anita a few days later with the rest of the Shirreffs stable.

Claiming Crown to be run Dec. 5 at Gulfstream

The popular Claiming Crown will return to Gulfstream Park for a ninth consecutive year on Saturday, Dec. 5.

The event will again offer nine races, with purses totaling $835,000 in 2020, down from $1,110,000 a year ago. The Claiming Crown highlights the opening weekend of the 2020-21 Championship meet, which kicks off on Dec. 2.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A well-matched field of 10 3-year-olds and upward will clash in the nominal Sunday feature, a $77,000 first-level allowance scheduled for a mile on the turf. Oak Hill figures among the core of favorites when looking to revert to a two-back maiden triumph at Saratoga for trainer Al Stall Jr.

First post is 12:45 p.m. Eastern, with sunshine and a high of 73 in the local forecast. Live televised coverage is available on FS1 (12:30-4) and FS2 (4-5:30).

Mena sidelined with rib injury

Jockey Miguel Mena has been sidelined by injury since March.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Jockey Miguel Mena is expected to be out of action for a few weeks after being thrown to the turf by his mount, Urbana, at the finish of the fifth race Thursday. Mena suffered two cracked ribs in the incident and took off the balance of his mounts.

Agent Joe Santos said Mena could return “by the second week of Keeneland,” which opens Oct. 2.

“No punctures or anything else internal,” Santos said. “He heals up pretty quick.”
