Rockin on Ice looking hot in sprint

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Rockin on Ice has been on a roll throughout the second half of the Woodbine meeting, and he should be favored in Wednesday's nominal feature, a $32,000 claimer for fillies and mares.

Rockin on Ice was claimed by owner Johnny Martellacci and trainer Abraham Katryan for just $18,000 on Sept. 25 from her second straight 5 1/2-length score in conditioned claiming company. She defeated $32,000 opposition in her first start off the claim, and then finished third in a tough $40,000 claimer won by a sharp invader from Manitoba.

Tomorrows Cat's offspring love New York

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Progeny of the second-year sire Tomorrows Cat took the top two spots in both $125,000 New York Stallion Stakes events for juveniles Sunday at Aqueduct.

Meanwhile, grass specialists Quantum Merit and Ma Femme cruised to easy scores in a pair of $100,000 Stallion Stakes races for 3-year-olds and up, run over soft turf.

Hoosier Park: Ellens Lucky Star shines

ANDERSON, Ind. - Ellens Lucky Star won a stretch duel to nail down her third consecutive win of the meet in the $38,300 Richmond Stakes for Indiana-bred and -sired fillies and mares.

Ellens Lucky Star moved to the front on the far turn of the 1 1/16-mile race, then fought off a challenge by One Eyed Jackie in the stretch to win by 1 1/2 lengths in 1:47.68 over a fast track. Ellens Lucky Star paid $2.80.

* Dakota Diamond rallied from off the pace for a $31.80 upset in the $39,150 Gus Grissom for males at 1 1/16 miles.

Laurel: Gill runner wins on DQ

White Mountain Boy ($5.20) was awarded the victory in the $60,000 Rollicking Stakes when first-place finisher Hands On was disqualified for drifting in during the stretch run.

It was the third win on the program for leading owner Michael Gill and was Gill's fifth stakes victory of the year in Maryland. Gill has won 123 races at Laurel and Pimlico, 98 ahead of his closest competitor.

Delaware: Private Lap prevails

Private Lap ($4.40), ridden by Tony Black for trainer Steve Klesaris, won his fourth stakes of the season at Delaware Park when he defeated Distinct Vision by 1 1/2 lengths in the $58,200 Shecky Greene Stakes.

In the $57,900 Stanton for 2-year-old fillies, Little Andrea ($2.60), exiting the Grade 1 Frizette in New York, cruised to a 2 1/2-length victory.

Louisiana Downs: Electrode cruises

BOSSIER CITY, La. - Electrode made a strong case for being the meeting's top sprinter, cruising to a 2 1/4-length win in the Island Whirl Handicap. Compendium, who dueled outside the winner for much of the way, had to settle for second, followed by Taxicat.

Owned by Jack Brooks and trained by Cole Norman, Electrode ($11) won for the third time in five local starts this year and for the sixth time in his career. He covered the seven furlongs in 1:22.25 over a fast strip under Carlos Gonzalez and picked up $24,000 to increase his career bankroll to just over $120,000.

Silver Bird maybe not just a sprinter

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Heading into last Sunday's Glorious Song, trainer Reade Baker believed Silver Bird's repertoire may have been limited to sprinting.

But after observing the way Silver Bird dispatched her opponents in the seven-furlong Glorious Song, Baker was singing a different tune.

"I'm not convinced she isn't just a sprinter, but it's given me pause for thought," said Baker, who watched Silver Bird rate kindly and run down the front-runners for a 4 1/2-length victory under her regular rider, Jim McAleney.

Distinctive Code scores in Majorette Handicap

BOSSIER CITY, La. - Sunday's closing day feature, the Majorette Handicap, failed to produce much drama as Distinctive Code won in a laugher. Took Out rallied from last to finish second, four and a quarter lengths behind the winner. Bailey's Affair, coupled with Took Out, finished third followed by Cielo Girl.

Crazy Ensign rallies to win Avigaition Stakes

ARCADIA, Calif. - Crazy Ensign rallied from last in the final half-mile to win Sunday's $74,150 Avigaition Stakes at Santa Anita, her second stakes win of the year.

Ridden by Alex Solis, Crazy Ensign ($4.80) finished 1 1/8 miles on turf in 1:46.17.

Crazy Ensign was at the back of the field for the first six furlongs, well behind the quick pace of 22.98 and 45.93 seconds shared by Go on Baby and Dessert.

Ema Bovary makes it four straight

ALBANY, Calif. - Ema Bovary ($5.20) won her fourth straight stakes race, capturing the $61,250 Camilla Urso Handicap at Golden Gate Fields on Sunday.

The 4-year-old Chilean-bred filly sat behind a wall of five horses into the turn in the six-furlong sprint as jockey Roberto Gonzalez waited for room to run. He moved to the inside around the turn then made a quick three-wide move at the top of the lane, splitting Pheiffer and Just Bill Me.

"Look at that little hole she went through," Gonzalez said watching the replay. "I just pointed her to the hole and said, 'Let's go.' "
