Grounds crew trying to soften turf

ARCADIA, Calif. - Leif Dickinson, the turf course superintendent at Santa Anita, has the weather service on speed dial these days.

The constant need for updates is not because of potential wet weather for Saturday's Breeders' Cup program. Dickinson is more concerned about the continued warm weather that has caused the turf course to become firmer and quicker than he wants in advance of an event that draws horses from throughout the United States and Europe.

Bonus Pay Day likely to run well off layoff

ARCADIA, Calif. - Bonus Pay Day earned a break during the Del Mar meeting after he suffered a minor injury when he put a leg over the webbing in front of his stall.

The unfortunate incident was preceded by consecutive losses to major stakes winners Bluesthestandard, Joey Franco, Candy Ride, and Sky Jack - and a ninth-place finish in an allowance race on July 26.

All of that led to a vacation for Bonus Pay Day, who has won 9 of 40 starts and $391,371 for a partnership that includes Frank Alesia.

Cactus Ridge's injury ends Calhoun's dream

CHICAGO - All summer, trainer Bret Calhoun fretted over Cactus Ridge. His colt was supremely fast. Cactus Ridge had suggested that as early as last spring, and confirmed it in June by winning his career debut at Arlington in an exceptionally fast time. But even as Cactus Ridge rolled through four straight wins over the summer, Calhoun wondered how long it would last.

"It was day to day, race to race, work to work," Calhoun said. "Just about last week, I'd finally bought into the idea he was going to make it. Then, bang."

Crafty Shaw gets to try turf again

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The only time that trainer Pete Vestal ever ran Crafty Shaw in a grass race was last year at Belmont Park, where the horse was coming off a lengthy layoff.

"It was a very unfair assessment of his ability," said Vestal.

Crafty Shaw faded after setting the pace that day, but he will get another try on turf as the probable favorite in Wednesday's feature at Keeneland.
