DEL MAR, Calif. - Redattore lost his status as the top turf miler in California when he was last of six in the Grade 1 Eddie Read Handicap at Del Mar on July 27.

Redattore's performance in the Eddie Read, won by Special Ring, made his stylish wins in the Frank Kilroe Mile at Santa Anita in March and the Shoemaker Breeders' Cup Mile at Hollywood Park in May seem like a long time ago.

On Wednesday, Redattore returns in a weaker field, starting as the 124-pound topweight and heavy favorite in the $75,000 Live the Dream Handicap on the closing day of the Del Mar meeting.

DEL MAR, Calif. - Yankee Gentleman moved closer to a possible start in the Breeders' Cup Sprint at Santa Anita next month by scoring his first stakes win in last Saturday's restricted $77,700 Pirate's Bounty Handicap.

Yankee Gentleman had a perfect trip under Julie Krone, scoring by five lengths over Avanzado. The six-furlong time of 1:07.90 was the fastest clocking of the meeting at the distance. He was given a 117 Beyer Speed Figure.

ELMONT, N.Y. - It isn't surprising that trainer Bobby Barbara didn't sleep a wink on Sunday night.

Barbara, 50, had every right to be keyed up. The trainer, who saddled his first winner at Aqueduct in 1984, was coming off the biggest weekend of his career. On Sunday, Barbara won his first Grade 1 with Indy Five Hundred in the Garden City Breeders' Cup at Belmont Park. On Saturday, Buy the Sport was turned over to Barbara after winning the Grade 1 Gazelle.

ELMONT, N.Y. - A solid weekday card awaits fans on Wednesday, the start of the first full week of racing at Belmont Park's fall meet.

The featured eighth race, one of two strong grass races on the card, is a $65,000-added overnight stakes for filly and mare turf runners, the Via Borghese.

The Via Borghese, which will be run at 1 1/8 miles on the inner turf, drew nine horses, plus two main-track-only entries, Call an Audible and Golden Sonata.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The 10th running of the Kentucky Cup may be the deepest yet. Four of the five races in the series, to be run Saturday at Turfway Park in Florence, Ky., are shaping up with large fields, while the remaining race is expected to feature a showdown between Congaree and Perfect Drift.

CHICAGO - There were two overnight stakes races for 2-year-olds last week at Arlington. Korbyn Gold looked good winning the Spectacular Bid on Saturday, and I'm a Majek Girl looked even better winning the Top Flight on Friday. But it is possible that those races will have no impact on Arlington's major 2-year-old races on Sept. 27.

CHICAGO - For Twilight Road, a stakes-quality sprinter-miler, there have been better things than Wednesday's featured eighth race at Arlington Park. There may be more in the not too distant future. For Attack the Books, a 4-year-old allowance-class horse, Wednesday's race is the thing itself.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Aftica will try to make all the running in Wednesday's Woodbine headliner, a six-furlong allowance race for Ontario-sired fillies and mares.

Aftica, a 3-year-old trained by Beverly Chubb, finished fourth after stalking the pace on a sloppy strip in an Ontario-sired maiden sprint in her debut June 5. She fared better over a fast track against $40,000 maiden claiming company in her second start July 2, when she finished third after leading until the eighth pole.

EDMONTON, Alberta - After running in the Canadian Derby, Regal Ability started just once more last year, and he had just two races in 2003 leading up to the $100,000 Speed to Spare at Northlands Park on Saturday.

The grueling 1 3/8-mile distance appeared to be too much for the 4-year-old gelding to overcome, and it was no surprise that Regal Ability, a Don Gilkyson-trained Alberta-bred, was 25-1 at post time.

Breaking cleanly from post 6, Regal Ability surged to the lead as the rest of the field settled in behind, waiting for the opportunity to pounce.

Boozin' Susan outdueled favorite Tangier Sound in the $50,000 Incredible Revenge Stakes, winning the five-furlong turf race by 1 1/4 lengths under jockey Jose Ferrer. Tangier Sound held second over Multiple Wins, who was coupled in the wagering with Boozin' Susan.

Boozin' Susan ran the five furlongs over good turf in 55.83 seconds and paid $8 as part of the entry trained by Linda Rice.
