HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Supah Blitz surprised most of the betting public when he finished second to Trust N Luck at 33-1 in the Grade 1 Fountain of Youth. The only thing that surprised trainer Manny Tortora that day was the price.
NEW ORLEANS - Badge of Silver put in a sharp gallop Friday morning at Fair Grounds and is on target to work here either Sunday or Monday. That breeze is intended to set Badge of Silver up for next Sunday's Grade 2 Louisiana Derby.
Badge of Silver's physical appearance during his gallop this morning starkly contrasted with the horse's condition earlier in the week. After a strong gallop Feb. 22, Badge of Silver "was knocked out," trainer Ronny Werner said.
OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Will the third time be the charm for the $75,000-added Hollie Hughes Handicap on Sunday at Aqueduct?
The Hollie Hughes for New York-breds has been postponed twice because of weather-related cancellations. First scheduled for Feb. 16, the six-furlong Hollie Hughes was delayed and brought back a week later. It again was canceled when racing was scrapped after last Sunday's fifth race because of poor track conditions due to rain.
Rain is again in the forecast.
HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Lost in the shuffle of Colorful Tour's game win in the Grade 3, $100,000 Essex at Oaklawn Park on Feb. 22 was the big race Slider ran two races earlier on the card when he rolled to a six-length win in a one-mile allowance and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 108.
Because Slider ran so well, he will face Colorful Tour in his next start, the $100,000 Razorback Handicap on March 16.
It was not the first big Beyer for Slider. Last year, the horse earned a 120 in a seven-furlong race at Keeneland.
ALBANY, Calif. - Derby Fever comes to northern California with next Saturday's running of the El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields.
The Grade 3, $200,000 race has been one of the most productive preps on the Triple Crown trail with the likes of Charismatic and Tabasco Cat, both of whom won two-thirds of the Triple Crown, included among the winners.
SUNLAND PARK, N.M. - Sunday's $100,000-added Borderland Derby is the final local prep for the newly created $500,000 WinStar Derby on March 31. With Sum Trick, winner of the Riley Allsion Futurity, electing to stay in California, the one-mile Borderland gives others an opportunity to prove their worth - something they all need to do to earn a spot in the WinStar.
It's not every day a horse fires a 112 Beyer Speed Figure at Delta Downs, but that's what Oak Hall did in his last start Feb. 1. That number makes him look awfully imposing Sunday night in the $150,000 Gold Cup for statebreds, which is the second richest race of the Delta meet behind the $500,000 Delta Jackpot.
Oak Hall will face six others in the one-mile Gold Cup, including Zarb's Luck, the $100,000 Louisiana Champions Day Sprint winner who finished second to Oak Hall on Feb. 1 in the $75,000 Bayou State, which was restricted to horses bred in Louisiana.
ARCADIA, Calif. - The focus will be almost entirely on Congaree in Saturday's $1 million Santa Anita Handicap.
Already at this meeting, Congaree has scored convincing wins in the San Pasqual and San Antonio handicaps. Jerry Bailey, a major part of the horse's three-stakes winning streak, will ride, after having defected to Medaglia d'Oro and then regaining the mount. And, Congaree is unbeaten in his career at Santa Anita, a winning streak he could stretch to five in the Big Cap, the richest race of the meeting.
ARCADIA, Calif. - The field for Saturday's $200,000 San Rafael Stakes changed markedly just before entry time on Thursday morning at Santa Anita, but the race scenario remains the same, with likely favorite Our Bobby V. forced to prove he can sit off a determined front-runner and still win.
