Badge of Silver best in Risen Star

Lou Hodges Jr.
Badge Of Silver ($7.80) wins by 10 lengths in the $150,000 Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds on Sunday.

NEW ORLEANS - Before Sunday, Badge of Silver was a flashy sprinter who ran very fast. Now, he's a flashy route horse who runs very fast.

Making his first start over a distance of ground, Badge of Silver dispatched his rivals as easily as he had in two starts at one turn, winning the $150,000 by 10 lengths. Badge of Silver ($7.80) pressed a fair pace under Robby Albarado and took off just before the quarter-pole, running alone through the stretch under the mildest encouragement. His time of 1:42.99 for one and one-sixteenth miles missed the stakes record by .01 seconds.

Three-for-one holiday

Thanks to the whims of Mother Nature, horseplayers at Laurel Park will get a rare opportunity to tackle three six-figure stakes on one card.

A snowstorm that wiped out live racing at Laurel on both Saturday and Sunday has created a stakes bonanza for Monday's special Presidents Day program.

The regularly scheduled feature is the Grade 2, $200,000 General George Handicap, which drew a field of 12 older sprinters, led by Grade 1 winners Affirmed Success and D'wildcat.

Will 'Beauty' bounce off big win?

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Explosive Beauty was such an overwhelming winner last month in the $50,000 Dixie Belle on opening day at Oaklawn Park, the obvious question has to be asked: Can she duplicate the effort when she starts Monday in the track's $50,000 Martha Washington?

"I hope she does," said Cole Norman, who trains Explosive Beauty. "Off a huge race like that you're always concerned about a bounce, [but] she seems to have come out of the race just fine, and had a good work this week.

Baze collects five wins on card

ALBANY, Calif. - When you win 400 races a year, winning five in one day becomes, well, almost routine.

That's how Russell Baze started the holiday weekend with five victories on Friday at Golden Gate Fields. He then won the first four races on Saturday's program.

Baze opened Friday's card with a routine wire-to-wire victory aboard Condellone in a 5 1/2-furlong race for $6,250 claimers. Condellone had not won since her debut on July 12, 2001, but was dropping from a $16,000 claimer at Santa Anita.
